Nevada County Consolidate Fire District
![]() Fire Marshal Patrick Mason is an experienced fire marshal with a demonstrated history of working in the public safety industry. Fire Marshal Mason started with the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District as a seasonal firefighter in 1997 and spent over 20 years in fire suppression working his way up to the rank of a Captain. He transitioned over to the department of Fire Prevention in 2017 as the Deputy Fire Marshal and promoted to Fire Marshal in 2022. The Nevada County Consolidated Fire District - Department of Fire Prevention, is responsible for code enforcement through fire and life safety inspections, public education, and fire investigation. The Prevention Department is responsible for all CA state mandated inspections, plan reviews, new construction, tenant improvement projects and issuing Operation Permits per the CA Fire Code. The inspections provided are to educate and ensure dangerous fire and life safety hazards are identified and abated. The fire and life safety inspection program reduces risk by safeguarding residents, visitors, buildings, and industrial processes and strengthening the community’s economic protection and vitality. Public education and outreach provides the foundation for citizen actions that can further reduce property and life loss in their homes and workplaces. By engaging in community-based events, engine company visits, station tours, and community meetings, we strive to provide a link for the public to connect directly with the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District and stay informed. Fire investigation falls within the Department of Fire Prevention and has the responsibility to investigate all types of fires to determine the origin and cause. Fire investigators are responsible for conducting fire scene and follow-up investigations up to and including the apprehension of that person(s) responsible for the commission of arson and / or crimes related to arson. All investigators are peace officers per California Penal Code Section 830.37(a). |

The Adventures of Superfreak: My Childhood on the Hippie Trail
![]() Caleb Dardick is the author of The Adventures of Superfreak: My Childhood on the Hippie Trail. He has lived in Nevada County since 1973, grew up on the San Juan Ridge, and later served as Assistant CEO for the County of Nevada and Executive Director of the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL). Caleb’s professional life has spanned public service, nonprofit leadership, environmental advocacy, disability-related community work, and local government. A graduate of UC Santa Cruz, Caleb is also a leadership coach and storyteller. He lives in Nevada City with his wife. His father, Sam Dardick, was a Nevada County Supervisor and a disability-rights leader; his parents also co-founded FREED, an independent living center serving people with disabilities. Caleb was raised by activist parents with disabilities in the heart of the American counterculture. At five years old, he crossed continents with his family along the Hippie Trail from Amsterdam to India — part of a generation’s sweeping search for freedom. In The Adventures of Superfreak: My Childhood on the Hippie Trail, Dardick tells the story of his family “dropping out” — capturing the wild promise of the era and the intimate realities of family life on the road. He writes about what happens after the long search for freedom — about the real work of building community, living with disability, and inheriting a generation’s idealism. Many of you may recall in 2017, Cathy walked 500+ miles on the Camino de Santiago. Cathy's Walk to End Polio was in honor of Caleb's dad Sam Dardick. Caleb generously created a series of special videos sharing the intimate story of his dad's life with polio. |
