This Week: The ACME Robotics Team and Stephanie Lewis
Nevada City Rotary has been a proud supporter of the ACME Robotics Team for several years now. This year is a big one for the team as several original members graduated and they added a second team ARES. Stephanie Lewis is one of the team coaches. She also taught our Girls Who Code program one year.
The team will share their successes for the year, probably show off their robot. This is always a fun meeting!
Last Week: Cathy Wilcox-Barnes - President-Elect
It is official by unanymous exclamations! A big THANK YOU to Cathy!
Area 4 North Star Garden Project
Last Saturday Tom, Ken and Tom went to the North Star House and joined about 15 other Area 4 Rotarians to complete Phase 2 of the garden project. Led by Adam Weiss, of Grass Valley South, I pushed a wheelbarrow for about 4 hours delivering dirt to the planting areas while Tom M was on shovel duty spreading and leveling followed by a repeat performance with a delightful mix of compost and fertilizer. Meanwhile Ken worked with the Iron Gate team leveling and securing the really impressive iron gates at the front and rear entrance to the garden. With the gates working perfectly and his task for the day complete Ken headed for home around 11:30 with the satisfaction of another job well done. With the dirt and compost project done and all of my large muscle groups wondering aloud if we were done yet they took me and our wheelbarrow home around noon to finish off my weekend on the couch. Tom M stayed with a few of the more stout of heart and spread a nice layer of base material on all of the walking paths and they wrapped up the project somewhere round 3 o’clock.
Stay tuned for Phase 3 of the garden project, which will be planting of the period correct foliage in the garden. It really is a rewarding experience to pitch in and work shoulder to shoulder with fellow Rotarians from our Club and getting to know members of surrounding Clubs in our area.
Global Partners for Development: Vineyards to Villages
Don Harris and David Stare talked about the wonderful work ofGlobal Partners for Development: Vineyards to Villages. A unique partnership has been built between the Sonoma County wine industry and African communities through the Vineyards to Villages (V2V) initiative. Through V2V, the Sonoma County wine industry is “turning wine into water” by funding clean water infrastructure, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education for rural schools in western Kenya. Los Barriles, Baja Here We Come!
Nevada City Rotary is unfolding plans for our fourth trip to Los Barriles. Again we will partner with our Los Barriles Twin Club on a very special project. Last year the team did diabetes and blood screening for students at East Cape Medical Clinic and a local school. Everyone was very moved by the experience with the children.
Project focus: This year's team is going to East Cape Community Vision Center in Los Barriles to assist in conducting secondary (follow-up) vision screening for children and adults. This will enable East Cape Community Vision Center's medical staff to prescribe and fabricate eye glasses with corrective lenses.
For fun: Work includes play too! Chris and Christine Geyer will again host a dinner for all participants; on Sunday go to the beach/swim, outings in off-road vehicles/ATV’s, local tourism, shopping, and getting to know your counterparts in the Los Barriles club
Dates: March 21 travel day, March 22-23 work days at the Vision Center, March 24 R & R day with explorations, shopping, the beach, etc. Return home March 25 or 26 (return in time to participate in the Area music contest March 27).
Meeting: We will get together to discuss travel logistics in January.
