This Week's Social:  Meet Jason Jillson, The Ham Stand - a Top Chef in The Hungry Games

The Ham Stand Charcutier Jason Jillson

At The Ham Stand, we do one thing, and we do it really well: salumi. From coppa to culatello, bacon to bresaola, salami to sausage, we’ve got you covered from formal gatherings to backyard barbecues (and midnight snacks in between). In case you don't know, "Salumi is an umbrella term for the vast range of cured Italian meats available." Peruse the menu, get excited, sign up with your email to get updates.

"A self-taught butcher and curer, Jillson is by no means a novice. He earned a graduate degree in culinary instruction, a six-year program that set him on a long path of preparing and sharing food with the public.

He worked for the Fairmont hotel group, working in the property's kitchens in Chicago and Boston. He was then enlisted to help launch the eateries of the chain's Dubai location.

Eventually he moved to California and worked in catering before deciding to take the plunge and open a butcher/meat shop that would showcase his talents and use his passion for creating specialty meats.

Currently, Jillson is sourcing meat from ranches in Chico and Penn Valley."  Stand by Your Ham, The Union, July 10, 2018. Meet our Chefs!

Ticket sales for The Hungry Games are in full swing but there will be some nervous energy until the last ticket is sold.  We need every member sharing with friends, neighbors and colleagues so tell everybody you know about this exciting fundraiser and what we do with the money, how much fun there is to be had at the event, and a good chance of winning twelve $100.00 gift certificates to twelve great local restaurants.  Send your family, friends and neighbors a copy of our Hungry Games Press Release (attached) which talks about not only what but why this fun event.  Next year’s budget and what we can do largely depends on what we do with ticket sales in the next two and a half weeks.  I’m offering up as gourmet a meal as I can turn out at my house for two to the person who sells the most tickets.

Please bring payments for event and raffle tickets along with the raffle stubs to Thursday’s social so we can collect outstanding monies. If you have tickets that you do not think you are going to be able to sell, please bring them and turn them in on Thursday.  AND we have LOTS OF TICKETS available so KEEP ON SELLING!

If you are a Facebook user share the Hungry Games event with all your friends.  Post the poster and the link to our web site on your Facebook page. Also check out the fabulous videos of our Chefs by clicking Meet our Top Chefs.  You just never know who might want to join in the fun.

Bulbs watch continues at Penzance Park

Over the last few years we have planted 1,500 or so bulbs at Penzance Park.  We will be dancing through daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses soon!!!

Watch this space for flowers popping out all over Penzance Park!

Los Barriles is fast approaching!

Nevada City Rotary is finalizing plans for our fourth trip to Los Barriles with 15 Rotarians and guests!  What a great trip.  Again we will partner with our Los Barriles Twin Club on a very special project.  See Carolyn Feuille if you are interested in going but have not signed up yet!

Project focus: This year's team is going to a number of schools on Friday and Saturday to do vision and wellness screenings in partnership with East Cape Community Vision Center in Los Barriles. This will enable East Cape Community Vision Center's medical staff to prescribe and fabricate eye glasses with corrective lenses.

For fun: Work includes play too! Chris and Christine Geyer will again host a welcome dinner for all participants; on Sunday go to the beach/swim, outings in off-road vehicles/ATV’s, local tourism, shopping, and getting to know your counterparts in the Los Barriles club

Dates: March 21 travel day, March 22-23 work days at the Vision Center, March 24 R & R day with explorations, shopping, the beach, etc.  Return home March 25 or 26 (return in time to participate in the Area music contest March 27).

Want to support this project?  Whether you are traveling with the group or not, if you would like to make your own monetary contribution to the project, please give your check to Nicole and make it out to: The Rotary Club of Nevada City Foundation.

Girls Who Code at Seven Hills

Girls Who Code program continues into the new year. The girls love our healthy snacks.  Please signup with Nancy Kemp to serve as host and/or bring healthy snacks a week or more for Girls Who Code participants. If you haven’t done it before, Nancy has great instructions on what to serve.  It is another incredible opportunity to become involved and participate with the youth in our community.
