In lieu of our social on May 15, we went on a field trip to the Inn Town Campground, located at 9 Kidder Lane in Nevada City. It’s a great place if you have family or friends coming for an event. They have tent sites, RV sites and a number of “glamping” tents. There is a refreshing swimming pool and family friendly films at night. The camp store has all of your camping needs and there is a common area with a shared kitchen and dining area if you want to cook a nice meal while camping. We had a wonderful walk around the campground with our guide, Erin. In the middle of the property is the historic Chinese Cemetery which is a local cultural site. The custom at the time was to bury bodies and then later send the bones home to China; so there are no bodies buried there. In a lovely pine forest, there is one large sugar pine and many big ponderosa pines. Rotary Rob decided to climb a tree and learned the hard way that ponderosa pines can be prickly! If you missed the field trip, please visit them atInn Town Campground, Nevada City Glamping and Camping.
Since May is Youth Services Month for Rotary International, I want to give a big shout out this week to District 5190 for our Rotary Eighth Grade Leadership Program. Inspired by RYLA, REGL is a weekend program for 8th graders held every September at Grizzley Creek Ranch in Portola. At the camp, students build leadership and collaboration skills while making new friends. It is amazing to watch the transformation of these students over the 3 days. Then they go back to school prepared to do a service project for their school during their 8th grade year. The Nevada City Club sponsors the team from Mount Saint Mary’s. Big thanks to Karen McDonald for corralling our students and communicating with parents each year.
At the District 5190 Top Gun Rotary Conference in Fallon, we were all thrilled to see the REGL Camp Directors, Karen Shimamoto of the Rotary Club of Alturas and Paula Dolliver of the Rotary Club of Sparks awarded the Rotary International Youth Service Award. Congratulations to these two for this very well deserved recognition! To learn more about REGL at Rotary Eighth Grade Leadership Program (REGL)

SAEL Interact Hosts its 2nd Harmonious Wolf Trail Run!
Cooler temperatures and overcast skies did not diminish the enthusiasm of over 40 runners, walkers, parents with pre-school children, and a dozen dogs from participating in this local fundraising event organized by the Interact Club of Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning (SAEL).
Starting at the Gold Country Equestrian Trailhead on Harmony Ridge, participants chose either a 1.4 mile course or a 3.46 mile course. A half dozen Interactors helped set up and monitored the course under the leadership of Byron Bird. Our Rotary team consisted of Carolyn Feuille, Walt and Sandy Stickel, Tom Ryan, Cathy Wilcox Barnes, as well as Tom and Robin Milam. Tuco, Allie, and Cooper represented our 4 legged participants. This fundraiser had no entry fee yet was able to raise over $500 in voluntary donations, all of which will be donated to Sammie's Friends, a local animal shelter.
Board Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month. Our June 9 meeting is at 5:30pm to better accommodate schedules among our new board. It will be via Zoom with President Louise.
Not a Board member but want to join us? Contact Robin or reply to this Rotario for instructions. All club members are encouraged to attend a meeting. Location subject to change, please ask.
