What an amazing community we live in!
A group of us attended the Area 4 Rotary Community Awards event last Wednesday, hosted by the Nevada City 49er Breakfast Club. We watched the Business of the Year award presented to Pascale Fusshoeller and Susan Levitz of YubaNet, our go-to-online news source for all things happening locally; Citizen of the Year given to Jerry Westfall who has volunteered as umpire and referee for countess local youth games; and Volunteer of the Year given to Brad Peceimer, who has single-handedly managed to house over 160 persons for whom he has rehabbed RVs. Each of these individuals’ efforts at improving our community was described in detail; and in each case, I was amazed at the heart with which they have served our area. To bring their acts into focus, PDG Wyn Spiller gave a fine presentation on the history of the Four-Way Test, and how it came to be adopted by Rotary. It was a fun night!
We are starting to “get in the groove” at TJ’s Roadhouse, our new site for the 2nd and 4th Thursday Club lunch meetings. Last Thursday we were able to hear a great presentation by Lynda Guthrie about Amigos de Guatemala and her recent trip there, and watch her slides on the new huge screen they’ve hung on the wall of our dining room. We enjoyed seeing the photos of our sponsored schoolgirl, Wendy, for whom our yearly contribution makes it possible to attend school. And to add to the fun, Judy got the room all decorated, complete with noise-makers, and we had some tasty desserts, all to celebrate our Club achieving Club of the Year for District 5190!
Our meeting this week will be a little lower-key: we’ll join for a social gathering at 5:30pm at Round Table Pizza in Grass Valley on May 18. Socials are always a fun time together.
Our new Rotary year is fast approaching. Last week our PEs Karen, Doug and Cathy hosted a Board Retreat. This Saturday morning, District 5190 and DGE Stacy are hosting a Club Leadership Learning Virtual symposium for Club Leaders and new members. See details below and be sure to register.
Yours in Rotary Service,
