We had a busy week of service and fun. On October 17 we had our Pumpkins for Polio at our social at Round Table. The event was well attended with over 30 beautiful and innovative pumpkins for the live and silent auction. Many thanks to Cathy and our team of Rotary farmers and Judy with her team of artists. Big thanks also to John Drew of Bakbraken Acres for the patch on his farm, Peaceful Valley for pumpkin starts and Tim Ried for a load of manure (I’m not kidding)! The auction was lively and I’m sure that we have come a long way towards our $2,000 club goal for the Rotary Foundation Polio Plus fund.
Then on Sunday, October 20 we hosted our first annual PAWS and a Cause at Pioneer Park. It turned out to be a wonderful community event! We had a great group of vendors. The agility course from All About Dogs was amazing. We had a steady stream of community dogs and their human pals throughout the afternoon. Woof, woof, job well done Rotarians!

Coming up on October 24 is Rotary International’s World Polio Day. The date was chosen in honor of Dr. Jonas Salk’s birthday. It is worth remembering that poliomyelitis is a contagious disease that mainly affects children under 5. It is spread through contaminated water and can lead to paralysis. The first vaccine was invented by Salk in 1955 from inactivated virus. Later, in 1961, the oral vaccine invented by Albert Sabin came into commercial use. Many of us remember lining up at school to get our “sugar cube” with that vaccine. Rotary International launched the global effort to immunize the world’s children in 1985. Since that time, world incidence of polio reduced by 99.9% and was left endemic in only two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Unfortunately, there was an outbreak in Gaza earlier this year. According to RI, “Until we end polio forever, every child is at risk.” Thank You for your support of Rotary’s Polio Plus Initiative through your donations directly to the Rotary Foundation Polio Plus Fund, your contributions to the pumpkin jar at our social events and your generous support of Pumpkins for Polio! Thank you, Rotarians everywhere, “We are this close” to a polio free world.
Did you know that Rotary was named Rotary because the first club in Chicago had no regular place to meet so that would “rotate” to various places of business. With the adventurous spirit of those early Rotarians, we’re going to be on the move a little bit. Our lunch meeting on October 26 will be held at the new Bodhi Hive in the old Grass Valley Group building at 400 Providence Mine Road (see Google Map) in Nevada City. We’ll have sandwiches from SPD. Please make your choice and RSVP here and meet us there at 12:15 PM. This week it’s $10 if you’re eating and $5 without. We will certainly enjoy our fellowship and continue our important work in service to our community and the world.
Its World Polio Day and we are moving lunch meetings! As you know, Creekside has closed, and we are looking for a new venue. This week we are meeting at Bodhi Hive, 400 Providence Mine Road (see Google Map) in the Tech Center.
For lunch we are serving a choice of sandwiches from SPD. Lunch fees are $10 if you order a sandwich and $5 if you are not eating. Sandwich choices are:
1. Ham and cheese
2. Turkey
3. Vegetarian with avocado, sprouts, cucumber, pepperoncinis, etc.

A huge thank you to all! Nevada City Rotary you are absolutely pawsome! We had a tremendous Club turnout for setup, the event, and teardown. You all bent over backwards to welcome and support all out booth partners. Board Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month. Our October 14 meeting is at 5:30pmto better accommodate schedules among our new board. It will be via Zoom with President Louise.
