At our last social meeting on July 18, we had a wonderful field trip to see the new InConcert SierraEvents Complex. We were greeted by Ken and Julie Hardin as well as several board members. Located at 125 Crown Point Circle this 42,000 square foot venue will be an incredible asset for our whole community. It includes a 540-seat acoustic concert hall, a 150-seat flexible black box theater and a 300-seat conference center with a caterer’s kitchen and cafe.

In a strange twist of fate, less than three days after closing escrow on the property, a massive snowstorm hit our community. We locals called this one Snowmageddon II. The InConcert Sierra venue suffered a collapse of 14,000 square feet of the roof. Less than a year later they raised the roof again! The project is multi-funded with local donors, grants and has established a partnership with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, New York, with the intention of helping to ensure the future of classical music.
Your District 5190 Area 4 Rotary Clubs are excited and proud to support this mission with our multi-club project this year collecting used musical instruments and funding the refurbishment and repair of those instruments for local middle school students. As a career high school educator, I can assure you that middle school music is the future for everything that comes after. We’ll be sharing more details as they become available.
On Tuesday, July 16, I got to visit the Penn Valley Rotary Club where Co-President Kathy Williamson introduced our Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick’s Theme of, “The Magic of Rotary” and District 5190 Governor Dennis Geare’s Theme of “Rotarians Make Beautiful Music.” The guest speaker was Nichole McNeely of Child Advocates of Nevada County who introduced their 3 core programs, Court Appointed Special Advocates, Healthy Babies and the Child Safety Puppeteers.
At our next lunchtime meeting at 12:15pm on July 25 at Creekside, our speaker will be David West, Nevada County Veterans’ Services Officer. I know from personal experience how important our county Veterans’ Services Officers are. When my husband passed away suddenly in February of 2002, the Fresno County VSO took everything in hand. He made sure that Arthur had everything that was needed to honor his service. Years later when my dad needed long term care, Veterans’ Services was there again, making sure we knew how to access the services he needed. VSO officers, throughout our nation, live the Rotary ideal of “Service Above Self” everyday in their work. Don’t forget to RSVP to join us to hear from David!
