We were dark for the fifth Thursday on August 29 and I surely missed you all. That being said, on Tuesday, August 27, I was so proud to be a Nevada City Rotarian. That evening, Sierra Streams Institute held their monthly SciPub with a focus on local Nevada County organizations that address environmental concerns. The event was very well attended and Chris Newsom represented our club fabulously. She gave the crowd a good introduction to Rotary as a worldwide group of people of action. In 2021, Rotary International added “Environmental Sustainability” as a new area of focus bringing 6 areas to 7.
The Nevada City Rotary Club jumped right into action! Chris explained to the group how our Trex plastic recycling project works and demonstrated the difference between stretchable plastic which we collect in our 8 bins around town and other plastics. She reported that we continue to work with Waste Management and the county for a sustainable solution because we are at capacity. Chris put out the call for folks to gather up their end-of-life rechargeable devices for our 3rd Annual Lithium-Ion battery collection event, “Recycle and Repurpose Rechargeables” on September 21 from 10:00-2:00 at the Rood Center.
Hearing Chris talk about Rotary International’s 7th area of focus, I began to reflect on the 6 that RI has been working on for so very long. They are: (1) Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, (2) Disease prevention and treatment, (3) Water, sanitation and hygiene, (4) Maternal and Child Health 5) Basic education and literacy, and (6) Community Economic Development. As August has turned to September and we’ve had a few crisp mornings our thoughts turn to the season of autumn. We are looking forward to a craft talk from Carolyn Feuille at our social on September 5. We have a busy season coming up with the harvest of “Recyclable Rechargeables” on September 21. We will soon harvest our “Pumpkins for Polio” and our artists will paint them beautifully. And, it’s all hands-on-deck for our Paws and a Cause event on October 20 at Pioneer Park. It is indeed a good season to be a Nevada City Rotarian.
The Rotary Club of Nevada City is excited to announce the details of our 3rd annual three “R” event to collect, recycle and repurpose rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and devices on Saturday, September 21, 10am - 2pm in partnership with Redwood Materials at the Rood Center in Nevada City.
The public can drop off Lithium-ion rechargeable devices and batteries for recycling by Redwood Materials, a company that recycles the minerals and uses them to make new rechargeable batteries. Eligible items include cellphones, tablets, laptops, electric toothbrushes, e-shavers, vapes, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, power tool batteries, video game controllers, etc. Click for accepted items list.
Board Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month. Our September 9 meeting is at 5:30pmto better accommodate schedules among our new board. It will be via Zoom with President Louise.
