Hello Nevada City Rotarians and Friends!

At our September 5 social we were able to welcome Andrea Mason’s guest, Jessica Haro, Operations Director at SYRCL. We enjoyed a fascinating craft talk from Carolyn Feuille. She was born with the travel bug. She majored in Latin American Studies and went to Mexico and Columbia before graduating from college. During a gap year after college, she traveled Europe for 9 months and visited the Canary Islands and worked on a kibbutz in Isreal. Twice in her career she had a chance to live and work in France. She received her Masters’ degree in TOEFL (Teachers of English as a Foreign Language) from UCLA. While living in Los Angeles she taught English in workforce development classes for refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. In the 1990s until 2018 she worked in the silicon-valley high tech industry in training and development. She went to Japan 3 times and worked all around the world as a coach for international managers teaching them to lead in a culturally diverse workplace. So far, Carolyn has logged visiting 38 countries. Her next big trip she hopes to accomplish is to travel to Vietnam and Cambodia.

Recently, Rotary International revised the monthly themes to more closely align with the RI Areas of Focus. September is Literacy and Basic Education month. It is so easy for us here in the United States to take our free public education for granted. This benefit is not the case in many parts of the world. One of those places is Guatemala where public education ends after 6th grade.

Since 2021 the Nevada City Rotary Club has had the privilege of sponsoring the secondary education of Wendy through our partners at Amigos de Guatemala. We began when she was 13 in middle school and is now age 16 and in high school. She aspires to a professional career as a nurse. In school Wendy likes mathematics, communications, and language. She likes to play basketball. Nature brings her peace. Her favorite animal is the rabbit. She loves its fur and ability to hide. She writes that she is thankful for the opportunity to study that we give her. She called us her “Dear Godparents.” We are indeed blessed to be able to sponsor Wendy. To learn more about Amigos de Guatemala see Home - Amigos de Guatemala.

We’re looking forward to our lunch meeting on Thursday, September 12 at 12:15 at Creekside. Our speaker will be Susan Gouveia, the “Garden Goddess” speaking to us about Easy and Delicious Plant Based Recipes and Meal Planning. Rotary Rob loves fresh food from the garden and is eager for this program. Don’t forget to RSVP and order your delicious Creekside meal here. And, don’t forget to go mining in your junk drawers and your garage for rechargeable devices. Take them to the Rood Center on September 21 from 10:00 until 2:00 for our “Recycle & Repurpose Rechargeables.” And, as always, remember that it’s all hands-on deck for Paws and a Cause on October 20 in Pioneer Park.

Your President,

Louise

Lithium Ion Battery Recycle Sept 21 2024

Nevada City Rotary presents
the Three "R" Event:

Recycle & Repurpose Rechargeables

It is time to cleanout your drawers and tool sheds. Our 3rd annual three “R” event to collect, recycle and repurpose rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and devices is rapidly approaching on Saturday, September 21. We are hosting it from 10am-2pm in partnership with Redwood Materials at the Rood Center in Nevada City.

The public can drop off Lithium-ion rechargeable devices and batteries for recycling by Redwood Materials, a company that recycles the minerals and uses them to make new rechargeable batteries. Eligible items include cellphones, tablets, laptops, electric toothbrushes, e-shavers, vapes, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, power tool batteries, video game controllers, etc. Click for accepted items list. This is not an electronic e-waste event.

Please sign up and see Chris about volunteer needs! More details at Three “R” Event.
Paws and a Cause 2024

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2024 ~ 12:30PM - 4:30PM

A Dog and Family Friendly Event

Paws and A Cause will be a tail wagging community event with fun games & competitions, animal & food vendors, prizes, auctions, a photo booth, and more. While the event is a FUNdraiser to support Nevada City Rotary's youth and community services, we are looking to promote local pet and animal related services including Animal Control’s H.E.A.R.T, Sammie’s Friends, Animal Save, and many others who will host booths and mobile clinics, etc.

Excitement is building as we confirm pet & animal loving businesses. Let us know if you have potential contacts!

 A special thank you to:
John Hensley & Nevada County Properties/Recreation Realty for sponsoring our doggie bandanas!
and Woof Woof Sponsor Hospice of the Foothills
