Hello Nevada City Rotarians and Friends!

I truly missed all of you on Thursday when I was out of town visiting the Rancho Cielo School in Salinas. I am grateful to Past President Chris Newsom who led the meeting and was sorry to miss our speaker, Susan Gouveia, the Garden Goddess. She prepared delectably tasty plant-based tacos and generously shared them with us. Chris has this to report: Not only was Susan’s presentation of her plant-based tacos educational, fun and delicious, it reminded us of the message we hear consistently from environmental leaders that switching to a mostly plant-based diet improves the health of the planet!

One of our longstanding projects is the Girls Who Code club at Seven Hills. Rotarian Nancy Kemp and Seven Hills Faculty Advisor, Leslie May, lead the group. Even in 2024, women are seriously underrepresented in the technology industry. Girls Who Code strives to eliminate the gap by bringing together young women with industry professionals and give them direct, hands-on experience in coding. Nancy reports that the club will be getting up and running on Tuesday, September 17 after school. She will be asking members of our club to donate snacks for the girls and deliver them to Seven Hills on Tuesdays.  To learn more about the program visit this link. Girls Who Code.

I hope to see a large showing at our club social on September 19 at 5:30 at Round Table Pizza in Grass Valley. Our craft talk speaker will be Sierra Spivak-Young — our outbound Rotary Youth Exchange student who spent the 2023-24 school year in Northern Italy. She’s home and a junior at NU now. It is always so rewarding to hear from the youth who directly benefit from our support of youth programs like RYE. Then on September 21 from 10:00am – 2:00pm at the Rood Center we’ll be hosting our Recycle and Repurpose Rechargeable Batteries event. And, planning continues for Paws and a Cause on October 20 from at Pioneer Park.

Your President,
Louise
Lithium Ion Battery Recycle Sept 21 2024

Nevada City Rotary presents
the Three "R" Event:

Recycle & Repurpose Rechargeables

Coming this week! Clean out your drawers and tool sheds. Our 3rd annual Three “R” event to collect, recycle and repurpose rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and devices is rapidly approaching on Saturday, September 21. We are hosting it from 10am-2pm in partnership with Redwood Materials at the Rood Center in Nevada City.

The public can drop off Lithium-ion rechargeable devices and batteries for recycling by Redwood Materials. Minerals from recycled batteries are used to make new rechargeable batteries. We will collect cellphones, tablets, laptops, electric toothbrushes, e-shavers, vapes, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, power tool batteries, video game controllers, etc. Click for accepted items list. This is not an electronic e-waste event.

Please sign up and see Chris about volunteer needs! More details at Three “R” Event.
Paws and a Cause 2024

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2024 ~ 12:30PM - 4:30PM

A Dog and Family Friendly Event

Paws and A Cause will be a tail wagging community event with fun games & competitions, animal &food vendors, prizes, auctions, a photo booth, and more. While the event is a FUNdraiser to support Nevada City Rotary's youth and community services, we are looking to promote local pet and animal related services including Animal Control’s H.E.A.R.T, Sammie’s Friends, Animal Save, NorCal Golden Retriever Rescue, and many others who will host booths and mobile clinics, etc.

Excitement is building as we confirm pet & animal loving businesses. Let us know if you have potential contacts!

A special thank you to Club member sponsors:
John Hensley & Nevada County Properties/Recreation Realty for sponsoring our doggie bandanas!
and Woof Woof Sponsor Hospice of the Foothills
