Happy New Year Rotarians and Friends!

Bring on the new year and join us as for our first Club Social of 2024 at Round Table Pizza on Thursday. It will be wonderful to reconnect and share personal holiday stories. Jim Bair is sure to delight us with his craft talk.

As the calendar year 2023 draws to a close…

Your presidents would like to thank each and every one of you for making our Club fun and dynamic during the first half of the Rotary calendar year. Looking back, it has been a year filled with challenges for some members (health-related and other things), excitement as we have added new members and new energy to our club, and successes with multiple local and international service projects.

Happily, we are closing 2023 with a President-Elect (thank you Louise) who will help guide this club into the future. Speaking of the future, looking ahead we have so many things to look forward to: youth service grants and activities (BFFY, Girls Who Code, Interact Club, speech and music just to name a few), International service projects like Los Barriles Health Screening, Amigos de Guatemala and the Menstrual Hygiene kits, and, of course, Community, Environmental Sustainability and Vocational Service projects for everyone to get involved with. You don’t have to travel to put Service Above Self into action. We are also eagerly awaiting the induction of several more new members. What a way to start the New Year!

During the winter months, many people (our own club members included) struggle with depression and anxiety – reach out with a friendly phone call, text, or card to see how someone is doing. Many people struggle with food, housing, and employment insecurity, all of which contribute to mental health issues – be aware of opportunities for our club to reach out to help alleviate these insecurities, even if only one person at a time. There are so many ways we can model our Rotary International theme for the year – Create Hope in the World, and Governor Stacy’s theme for District 5190 – Rotary From the Heart. We encourage you to keep up the impressive work you have done already and charge into 2024 with a Rotary heart ready to serve and create hope in the world.

Happy New Year Rotary Club of Nevada City – you are the best!!!

PDG Doug McDonald Honored as Outstanding Eagle Scout

Special congratulations to PDG Doug McDonald. Doug was recognized with the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) Outstanding Eagle Scout Award. This award is a prestigious recognition granted by the local council’s (Redwood Empire Council, Santa Rosa) NESA committee to an Eagle Scout who has demonstrated outstanding achievement at the local, state, or regional level. This recognition honors an Eagle Scout whose efforts has made a positive impact in the community. Those receiving this recognition have devoted a lifetime of service to their community and the Boy Scouts of America at a great sacrifice to themselves and their families.

Doug served as a BSA professional for over 35 years, beginning as a District Executive, followed by Senior District Executive, Field Director, Finance Director, and then Council Scout Executive of three different councils in California. As a BSA professional, he guided his councils and their volunteers to numerous achievements of the Quality Council Award and Journey to Excellence Awards. Doug was a peer leader to other professionals and volunteers during his long BSA career in various councils in California.

Doug has actively served Rotary Clubs during his professional career wherever his career took him and during his retirement for a total period of nearly 40 years – he is still active in Rotary today. Past District 5190 Governor, his ongoing Rotary service includes District 5190 Grants Chair and co-president for the Rotary Club of Nevada City. He continues to advise on grants, service projects, and training. Doug was honored by District 5190 Rotarians with the creation of the McDonald Youth Leadership Development Fund to provide financial assistance to teens for participating in various leadership development programs in both Scouting and Rotary.

Los Barriles April 2024
Nevada City Rotary Club and Club Rotario Los Barriles Cabo del Este

Invite you to our annual East Cape Health Screening
April 10-14, 2024 in Los Barriles, Baja, Mx

Saludos Rotarians,

Please join us in Mexico for our club’s 8th International project in beautiful Los Barriles hosted by Club Rotario Los Barriles Cabo del Este! The town is located about 60 minutes away from the Los Cabos International Airport on the Sea of Cortez in Baja California Sur.

For most of the past 8 years, members of the Nevada City Rotary Club have provided health screenings for hundreds of kids in the East Cape area. Screenings are for glucose levels (to determine possible diabetes), blood pressure, vision, and a much-needed dental exam These screenings are very appreciated and followed up by the East Cape Health Clinic. If it weren’t for all the Rotarians volunteering in this project, some of the children might develop health problems that could go undetected, as many families do not see doctors regularly. Nevada City Rotary has also provided additional life-changing donations of eyeglasses distribution in Los Barriles and outlying areas. See 2023 Los Barriles Slideshow.

We encourage you to make your travel plans soon!
