We had a fascinating presentation from Christine McCormick, Associate Superintendent of the Nevada County Office of Education about Artificial Intelligence (AI) at our lunch meeting on April 10. Her message was that AI can be your virtual assistant, your partner and a helper in doing mundane tasks. Artificial Intelligence is defined as, “the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programed to think like humans.” Although AI goes way back and we have been using it on our smartphones for years (think predictive spelling), a defining moment was on November 30, 2022 when ChatGPT was released by Open AI. It has over 1 million users with 5 days of release. Christine gave us some strategies to use AI to make our lives easier. One was using WAYMO driverless cars when visiting San Francisco. She said they are everywhere and much faster than a Lyft or Uber. See WAYMO San Francisco. She also elaborated on many uses of AI in the classroom to make teachers’ work easier and encourage students to think critically about what they learn through AI or the Internet in general. I’m not sure I’m ready to ride in a driverless car in the city but I may try some ChatGPT. How about you?
We continue to celebrate Rotary International’s “Child and Maternal Health Month,” some of us in real life and some of us vicariously through the photos of our team doing health screenings at the schools in small villages around Los Barilles, Mexico. It looks like a wonderful trip with joyful children and families. Here they are with the team getting their dental goodie bags and practicing with dental floss. Big thanks to our International Chair Kelly Babineau for her organization and braving the roads with cows and burros. We’ll hear their report at an approaching lunch meeting on April 24 (or May 8) at 12:15 at Bodhi-Hive. Watch for more 2025 Los Barriles photos.
Instead of our social at Round Table Pizza on April 17we’ll be visiting the Crystal Hermitage at Ananda to see the annual display of tulips. Please scroll down and RSVP. If you want to carpool, be at the parking lot in the Rood Center near the jail ready to leave at 5:00 PM sharp!

Turns out that Rob heard recently about a rabbit convention that was happening in honor of spring, so he took off and has made some great friends in the rabbit community. Sorry to report, he’s not inclined to return to Rotary for a while because he’s enjoying being with his peeps. But he is still proudly wearing his Rotary regalia.
Spring time is tulip time at Ananda's Crystal Hermitage Gardens. Each year some 20,000 tulips are replanted to create a lush garden display of some 100 varieties of pink, purple, orange and yellow tulips.
Join a private viewing of the gardens with Area 4 Rotarians, friends, and family hosted by fellow Rotarian Mai Lee, Volunteer Marketing Manager for Crystal Hermitage.
