If you missed Thursday’s meeting, you missed an interesting talk by Louise Johnson’s friend Tim Reid. He talked about Sustainable Ranching and all kinds of facts about cattle ranching that most of us (even those among us who have raised steers, cows, bulls, and heifers) didn’t know. Quick question: Most of you know the difference between a bull and a steer but what’s the difference between a heifer and a cow? Answer: Heifers are female cattle who have never calved. Tom Boxler pointed out the capital gains tax advantages of raising cattle. A few of us may have enough acreage to jump into the business! Tom Ryan even worked a deal for manure for the Pumpkins for Polio Patch.
Our Socials on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays have become quite a learning experience also. We get the chance to learn about our fellow Rotarians as they do their “Craft” talks, or Life Talks as they may better be described. We are learning all kinds of interesting things about the members we have in our Club. This coming Thursday, Paul Boch will share his story (maybe even where this photo was taken?) and I’m sure you won’t want to miss it.
Walt, Robin, and Cathy met with a group of SAEL High School seniors on Friday for the Kick-Off of their Elder Project. Guess who are the Elders and who are the Seniors? For eight weeks we will each be teamed with a group of 3-4 Seniors who will conduct interviews, videotape us, and then, at the end, present a video story of us with a written story to accompany it. We viewed some of the students’ work from past years and it is amazing what these young people can do and how interesting and caring they are. We’ll be eager to share this journey with you as we learn more about the students while they learn more about us. Several of the students are in the Interact Club. It is another great connection with SAEL. A big shout-out goes to Louise for looking for opportunities to deepen these connections with our area youth.
