At our social on May 1 at 5:30 at Round Table Pizza we took the opportunity to have a real social and just spend time with each other. We did take the opportunity to hear from our members and committee chairs with updates and accomplishments for this Rotary Year. Nancy Kemp reported that the Girls Who Code Project. Girls Who Code is an international organization which has clubs in middle and high schools. Our club is at Seven Hills and is facilitated by Nancy and teacher Leslie May. There are 10 girls in the club and they have learned six languages so far this year including Scratch, Python, Java and Java Script. Nancy appreciates the Rotarians who have brought snacks. They have met 27 times this year and the last session is on May 27.
We heard from Walt about the Upcoming SAEL Interact Harmonious Wolf Trail Run coming up on May 17. It has a one mile, a 5 K and a 10 K that you may run or walk. It is free to enter. We also need people to help out with course monitoring and registration. Another of our partnerships with SAEL is “The Elders Project” where seniors are paired with elders in the community. There are a series of on-camera interviews and the students then produce a documentary about the Elder’s life and a collection of original literature. Last year, Walt, Cathy and Robin were Elders. This year I got to be an Elder. If you are curious about the project and want to learn more to consider being an Elder, please come to the “Celebration of Learning” in the SAEL Multi-Purpose Room at 12:45 on Monday, May 12.
President Elect, Pearce Boyer, recapped his experience at the NJUHSD Scholarship night where Marley from NU was awarded our Vocational Scholarship and Keegan from Bear River was awarded our Allie Sells Buckle up for Safety Scholarship. He also shared some plans for conference and a little preview of our next Rotary year. Big thanks!
May is Youth Services month for Rotary International. District 5190 Youth Services were fully on display at our Top Gun Conference in Fallon, NV this past weekend. Area 4 Speech Contest winner, Graham, represented us well. The competition was won by Iliana who spoke about peacebuilding through art and her commitment to education by running to be the Student Board Member for the Nevada State Board of Education. Area 4 Music Contest winner, Joshua, gave a great demonstration with his bassoon and took third place! Felicity won the contest with an incredible playing of Franz Listz’ La Campanella. After hearing a completing story from Sophia who came as an exchange student from Venezuela, we got to see our Rotary Youth Exchange students from District 5190 and they served as Sergeants-at-Arms for the dinner on Saturday. We had a wonderful chance to remember long time Nevada City Rotarian, Wally Krill, at the Sunday Morning Celebration of Life. It was a great conference and we had loads of fun debunking our District Governor, Dennis Geare. Enjoy Top Gun photos.
On Thursday, May 8, at 12:15 we’ll be back for lunch at Bodhi-Hive and will hear the report from our Los Barriles Team. Big thanks to Nevada City Rotarian, Kelly Babinaeu for putting this awesome project together. Then, in lieu of our social on May 15, we will take a field trip to visit the Inn Town Campground in Nevada City. Please join us for any or all events.
