Dear Nevada City Rotarians and Friends!

We had a wonderful presentation from Erin Tarr, Executive Director of Bear Yuba Land Trust at our October 10 lunch meeting at Creekside. Bear Yuba Land Trust exists to conserve and protect the natural, working and cultural lands of the Bear and Yuba watersheds. They have conserved over 26,000 acres of land and built or maintained over 50 miles of trails. Conservation includes not only natural environments but also working land such as cattle ranches and Mountain Bounty Farms. They have a variety of educational programs for adults and children. They work collaboratively with both SYRCL and Sierra Streams Institute. A new acquisition is a Wildflower Ridge Preserve in the area by Rough and Ready Highway and Ridge Road that locals have long called, “hell’s half acre.” You can learn more about Bear Yuba Land Trust and peruse the programs and trail maps here: Bear Yuba Land Trust (bylt.org)

Sadly, it was our last meeting at Creekside. They are closing on October 20. We want to express our sincere thanks to Boe and all of his staff for their excellent service to us. We will continue to have our 1st and 3rd Thursday Socials at Round Table Pizza and are diligently looking for a new venue for lunch in the Nevada City Area.  We dedicated our Happy and Sad Bucks for a staff gratuity and were able to send them off with a very nice “tip” for the excellent service we have enjoyed there. Stay tuned and read your email for future locations.

October Happenings!

There is a lot going on in October. We have Pumpkins for Polio at our social on October 17 at Round Table. We’ve harvested a bumper crop of pumpkins. Judy and her team have been busy painting.  I can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with. Wear a costume if you so desire and bring your checkbook. Let’s meet our Rotary International goal for Polio Plus!

October 24 is World Polio Day and Rotary Clubs all over the world are celebrating being “this close” to wiping out polio. More information and a short inspirational video is here: World Polio Day | End Polio. Grass Valley Club is running the bar and food service at The Horsemen for polio on October 19. Doors open at 6:30 and the concert starts at 7:00. Grass Valley South’s polio fundraising drive is being spearheaded by BrewHaus on the corner of Spring Street and Pine in Nevada City. Every Sunday in October they are donating $1 for every pint sold. Let’s drink to that! Penn Valley is busy attending other clubs’ polio events so let’s welcome them when we see them.

And, it’s all hands-on deck for PAWS and A Cause on October 20 in Pioneer Park. We need every Rotarian to come and work. We need help from your friends and family too. Please sign up to volunteer for setup, event and teardown. This is a new FUNdraiser for us and we hope it is wildly successful. With the enthusiastic community support, we hope that it will turn into an annual event starting this year.

Steven’s Rusty proudly shows off his bandana!

Stay tuned to your email for the location of our October 24 lunch meeting when our speaker will be Kim Franchi from Silver Sneakers. She’ll teach us to be healthy and fit no matter what our age! Then, we will be dark on the fifth Thursday, October 31. Happy Halloween!

Your President,
Louise
Paws and a Cause 2024

Calling all Nevada City Rotarians, friends, and family!  We need YOU!

We are barking up a storm calling for all hands on deck Sunday October 20. Please make participating in this event a priority for the full day. We urge you to recruit friends and family to assist and sell tickets. Fencing setup will start around 7:30am, prep for other vendors and our Rotary booths around 9, and other vendors start setting up from 10 -12.  The event itself runs from 12:30pm - 4:30pm, and we intend to tear down before dark.

Please sign up here to a series of tasks.  Contact Robin if you need assistance.
