As we write this, the grey skies and rainy weather continue. And while we may grumble a bit because we want to be out doing fun things like hiking, gardening or just sitting on our decks in the sunshine, we will be happy for the rain this spring and summer.
Flowers are already starting to pop up and Penzance Park is about to burst into bloom. I’ve already seen two daffodils with their yellow showing in this parklet. In a few weeks make sure to make an extra effort to drive up Sacramento Street or down Adams to see this delightful hillside on the entrance to Nevada City brought to residents and visitors alike by none other than our Nevada City Rotary Club. For over fifteen (15) years we have continued to clear brush and berries and to plant bulbs each spring. The hard (but fun) work is paying off and the neighbors always stop to tell us how much they appreciate our efforts.
This past Thursday evening Paul Boch gave us a terrific craft talk about his journey from being a Long Island surfer to venturing out to the real surf on the West Coast. Paul gave us insights into his love of outdoor sports, his career in bugs, weights & measures, and animal control, and finishing off with his love of serving others. That passion has led him across the world to build houses in Jordan and Ethiopia among some places, to our annual Rotary trips to Baja Mexico. Only Paul could haul concrete blocks and cement up 41 steps all day with a smile on his face! We had three visitors, although Miles and Maury no longer feel like visitors, at the meeting. In addition to them, we got to meet Kathy Cahill, the new Public Health Director for Nevada County. Looks like we may have some more shot clinics in our Rotary Club future!
This week we are in for a treat at our lunch meeting when we hear from Eric Jorgensen on Divesting from the Climate Crisis. With all the hundred-year storms now becoming thousand-year storms, I’m very interested to hear about how we can change things. We hope you can join us at TJ’s. PLEASE make sure to make your reservation by Wednesday noon so that TJs staff can serve us efficiently!
Today - Monday- family, Rotarians, and Boy Scout friends from across our District and the US came together to celebrate Doug. In true Doug style many of his friends showed up in tartans and full Scottish regalia.
