While our club was dark last week on January 30 for our fifth Thursday, I had a chance to see the shining bright light or Rotary in our world by attending the Rotary Peace Conference last weekend in Rohnert Park. Through a variety of speakers and activities we were taught to reframe our view of Peace and Rotary.
For me, the most personally inspirational quotes came from our own DG Dennis Geare who noted, “Every humanitarian act is an act of peace. “One of the conference partners was the Institute for Economics & Peace, an Australian peace-based think tank. They brought their research based 8 Pillars of Peace and we saw how those concepts interact with Rotary’s 7 Areas of Focus. District 5190 Rotarians PRID Vicki Puliz and RIDE Wyn Spiller gave us a tool to assist in filtering our club projects through the lens of peace.
We heard from both inbound and outbound Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) students about bringing peace and understanding across cultures. We heard about Rotary Peace Pole projects and Rotary Peace Tree Projects around the region and the world. And, PastRotary International Vice President H. Dean Rohrs delighted Rotary Rob with a cuddle.
As I reframe my thinking to cherish every humanitarian act as an act of peace, I ask you to join me in wishing bon voyage and safe travels to Nevada City Rotarians Carolyn Feuille and Lynda Guthrie who left on Wednesday to travel with Amigos de Guatemala. They took greetings to Wendy from our club and wonderful gifts that Tally sent including a book about Nevada City which we all signed, bracelets with the Rotary Wheel and Peace Dove, and a 4 Way Test Journal. Additionally, they took 3 suitcases with 195 menstrual hygiene kits for the women and girls in the area. Thank you, Carolyn and Lynda!
On February 6 we’ll be back at Round Table Pizza in Grass Valley at 5:30. We will have Visiting Rotarian Laura Amacher from the GV South Club to speak with us about our Area 4 Multi-Club Musical Instrument Project. Then, on February 13 at Bodhi-Hive at 12:15 we will hear from Jeff Dellis about the new Nevada County Youth Commission. I look forward to seeing you then,
Area 4 Rotary Clubs of Western Nevada County are gearing up to collect and refurbish musical instruments for middle school students.
The Rotary Club of GV South is the lead on this project. In late January, GV South President Laura Armacher and her partner, Buckley, traveled to the Bay Area to pick up inventory from a music store in the East Bay that has closed. Local Kiwanian, Patrick Donaghey, has arranged this wonderful donation for us. The project is supported by an Area-wide District 5190 grant.
The first collection day will be from 9:00am to 1:00pm on Saturday, February 8 at Lyman Gilmore School. Please contact our Youth Services Committee Chair, Andrea Mason, at andreaemason@protonmail.com if you have questions, instruments you want to donate or to volunteer.

Give a gift that truly keeps on giving ~ fostering literacy among Nevada County’s youngest residents!
Nevada City Rotary is proud to launch Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Nevada County in the coming months. “Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is dedicated to inspiring a love of reading by gifting books free of charge to children from birth to age five, through funding shared by Dolly Parton and local community partners.” Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write, Dolly started her Imagination Library in 1995 to foster a love of reading among her county’s young children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month.
