Chris and Carolyn attended the District 5190 Conference this past weekend, along with seven other members of our club. We arrived with a lot of curiosity about how the theme of "The Gathering of the Clans” would materialize and left in a blaze of glory. We were impressed by the significant roles our Club members played in the Conference itself. Cathy was Chair of all the Plenary meal sessions - coordinating the many details, Karen served as emcee for the Friday night opening session, Robin supported Cathy behind the scenes with planning and production, PDG Doug and DGN Dennis - in addition to their DG line responsibilities - orchestrated the Parade of Presidents which acknowledged DG Jeff as well as your Co-Presidents, Gayle attended the Music Contest in support of our Area 4 musician and Pearce was cheering us all on Saturday.
First, the glory: Our club was chosen as the CLUB OF THE YEARfor the District and CLUB OF EXCELLENCEfor a medium-size club!!! Yipee! And, what a surprise! Yahoo!! These honors are based on the depth and breadth of our projects, especially environmental leadership, our new Interact Club, leveraging projects through District grants, our new membership growth, and much more. See our Club display below. Congratulations to all of you for the many accomplishments we have achieved together this year.
Highlights of the conference that we both enjoyed were the delicious food, the authentic Scottish clothing participants wore, and the contributions of all the remarkable and mature students. First they performed Celtic dances for us. The Music Contest winner was a violinist who may become a future Itzhak Perlman. Our contestant, Baraka Anderson, performed beautifully and won third prize! The joyous enthusiasm of the 22 RYE youth (Rotary Youth Exchange) from various countries was without boundaries.
We found the most interesting - as in original - speaker was John Francis, Ph.D. who taught us that how we treat each other strongly influences how we approach environmental sustainability and caring for the planet. He took a 22-year tour of walking all throughout the United States starting at age 27 and did not speak for 17 of those years. He instead focused on listening to others who then treated him well. Other speakers also emphasized the importance of listening in taking action with others to increase mutual understanding.
We thought the final significant session of the conference was the Celebration of Life procession for members and spouses who passed away this past year. With pride and sadness, Dennis Geare walked for Annette and Chris Newsom walked for Ron Knaus. We kept in mind their humorous dispositions and Ron's many years of service.
To celebrate our being the Club of the Year, please come to our meeting on May 11 wearing fun, party attire and bringing noisemakers. We’ll arrange a fitting dessert for lunch.
This week our Club Social moves to Mount Saint Mary Academy for a tour hosted by our Co-PE and teacher extraordinaire Karen McDonald and REGL students. Meet on the front steps of Mt Saint Mary’s at 5:30pm … Please be prompt so we can start our tour together!
Mt Saint Mary is at 400 Church Street, across from St Patrick Catholic Church in Grass Valley. The school shares the parking lot with St Joseph’s Cultural Center at the end of Church Street.
Baraka Anderson, a 10th grader at Sierra Academy (SAEL) represented Area 4 at the District 5190 Music Contest at Conference on April 29. A very talented pianist, Baraka placed third in the District competion. He played Shumann’s quite difficult piece “Fantasiestucke.” Winners shown left to right include first place winner ($1,000 prize) who is an accomplished violinist, second place ($500) also a pianist, and Baraka who won a $300 prize.

The 49er Breakfast Rotary Club of Nevada City will be hosting the Rotary District 5190 Area 4 Annual Community Awards. The event postponed due to snow has been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 10 from 5:30-7:00PM at Miners Foundry Cultural Center. Cost is $25/person payable through our Club. A favorite annual tradition among the five Rotary Clubs of District 5190 Area 4 is a joint celebration of The Rotary Foundation and our collective project accomplishments. It is also an opportunity to celebrate and honor those who through their generosity have achieved Paul Harris Fellow levels.
Grass Valley Rotary will be hosting a simplified version of the Foundation Recognition Dinner on Monday June 12th at the Wild Eye Pub in Grass Valley. The event is free to attend and attendees can order directly off the Wild Eye Pub regular menu and pay the restaurant directly. Reservations are requested by June 7th.
