On March 27 we heard from Rotarians Lynda Guthrie and Carolyn Feuille about their recent trip visiting Zacualpa, El Quince. They were joined by Jean Herschede, the volunteer Executive Director of Amigos de Guatemala. It is a small non-profit which delivers big hopes. During the trip, Carolyn and Lynda were able to see projects in Education, Health and Community Service. The Education team sponsors students for middle school and high school. We got to see pictures of our Nevada City Rotary student, Wendy and Lynda’s student, Ana Alicia. They also got to see desks and dictionaries donated by Rotary as well as computer labs for the middle school. Health projects included delivery of medical equipment, meeting student health needs as well as the Menstrual Hygiene Kits that Lynda and her team made. Community service projects include a water purification system, a community garden and a reforestation project. We are so fortunate to have had a chance to get a close up look from Carolyn and Lynda’s travels. To learn more about Amigos de Guatemala, check it out at Amigos de Guatemala.
April is Rotary International’s Child and Maternal Health month. At our Area 4 speech contest earlier this year, one of our speakers shared her compelling vision of working in the field of child and maternal health. She drew her inspiration from her own history as an ill child helped by Shriners’ Hospital and the care she received from her medical team. All over the world, Rotary makes high quality health care available to mothers and children so that they can live longer and grow stronger. A short video about Rotary’s efforts is at Saving Mothers and Children.
Rotary Rob feels badly because he was off playing with the pumpkins when the Bell was stolen! And while the bell is traveling, Louise received a ransom note ...
On April 4 we’ll be back at Round Table Pizza at 5:30 for our social event. We will have a guest speaker at this one, Kevin Ross from Music in the Mountains. He will preview all of the wonderful concerts and activities MIM is planning for the spring and summer. We’re going to wish our Los Barriles team bon voyage and safe travels as they head off to Mexico to provide needed health screenings for children in the outlying villages. On April 10, at our lunch meeting at 12:15 at Bodhi-Hive, we’ll hear from Christine McCormick, Associate Superintendent at the Nevada County of Education about Artificial Intelligence!
Spring time is tulip time at Ananda's Crystal Hermitage Gardens. Each year some 20,000 tulips are replanted to create a lush garden display of some 100 varieties of pink, purple, orange and yellow tulips.
By special invitation, Area 4 Rotarians, Nevada County Community Leadership Institute Class, friends, and family will be treated to a private tour of the gardens hosted by fellow Rotarian Mai Lee, Volunteer Marketing Manager for Crystal Hermitage. Join us for a very special tour!
