Happy Holidays Rotarians and Friends!

We ended the calendar year with a very special meeting with District Governor Stacy Graham. Her Rotary from the Heart theme set the tone for the warm vibrant meetings, first with our Board and then as a Club. DG Stacy welcomed Noel Brownell as our newest member and with Co-Pres Karen recognized Nicole with the Heart of Rotary and Judy with Quiet Rotarian awards.

Please note in celebration of the holidays, we are not meeting on Thursday December 21 or 28. Our next Club meeting will be a Social at Round Table Pizza on January 4, 2024.

Wishing you hearts filled with hope, love and joy,

Karen

Nevada City Celebrates with DG Stacy
DG Stacy touched our hearts with her personal Rotary story and her warm message to share openly from the heart. Together through Rotary we leave footprints where we have never been.

Stacy opened the meeting by inducting our newest member Noel Brownell. A big welcome to Noel who with his wife and two children own Tour of Nevada City Bike Shop.  Noel is also a successful Mortgage Broker and is sponsored by John Hensley.
Together with Co-President Karen, she recognized two Club members with the Heart of Rotary and Quiet Rotarian Awards.

Heart of Rotary - Nicole Dillard

Nicole has a true heart for Rotary and our Club. As president as of the Nevada City Rotary Foundation, she has reactivated it, was able to put a new active board in place, selecting her replacement as the long-time president for the benefit of the club and the community. She received her next level Paul Harris Fellow level 4 this year. In addition, she provides speakers’ gifts every week whether she can attend the meeting or not, she selects a book or two pertinent the speaker and all without wanting personal recognition. Nicole supports Polio Plus with a donation box at her shop. She’s a behind the scenes worker and valued member of Nevada City Rotary.

Quiet Rotarian - Judy Soldavini

Judy is our club’s Quiet Rotarian this year. As our club’s service director, she and her committee have made sure our meeting accommodations are comfortable, and convenient. She opened her beautiful home for Rotary informational meetings and has made it available to us in the future. Club social events would not be the same without her touch of hospitality and artistic abilities, always giving everyone the feeling of being welcome and included. Her crowning achievement for the first half of this Rotary year was pulling together her friends to decorate our homegrown pumpkins which raised through auction $1600. Congratulations, Judy!  Judy’s quiet leadership and heavy lifting behind the scenes is invaluable to our members.
Los Barriles April 2024
Nevada City Rotary Club and Club Rotario Los Barriles Cabo del Este

Invite you to our annual East Cape Health Screening
April 10-14, 2024 in Los Barriles, Baja, Mx

Saludos Rotarians,

Please join us in Mexico for our club’s 8th International project in beautiful Los Barriles hosted by Club Rotario Los Barriles Cabo del Este! The town is located about 60 minutes away from the Los Cabos International Airport on the Sea of Cortez in Baja California Sur.

For most of the past 8 years, members of the Nevada City Rotary Club have provided health screenings for hundreds of kids in the East Cape area. Screenings are for glucose levels (to determine possible diabetes), blood pressure, vision, and a much-needed dental exam These screenings are very appreciated and followed up by the East Cape Health Clinic. If it weren’t for all the Rotarians volunteering in this project, some of the children might develop health problems that could go undetected, as many families do not see doctors regularly. Nevada City Rotary has also provided additional life-changing donations of eyeglasses distribution in Los Barriles and outlying areas. See 2023 Los Barriles Slideshow.

Wrenn Cleary 2023 Global Scholar

Wrenn’s Oxford Matriculation

My first term at Oxford, or Michaelmas Term, has concluded and I've completed courses in Water and Health, Economics Law and Governance of Water, Climate and Catchment Processes, and one elective - Climate Change and the Media.

While most of my time is spent reading for classes, I've managed to take a few small trips including to nearby Blenheim Palace, the Cotswolds, and into London. I attended a holiday meal with my host club of Abingdon, where I got to pull my first Christmas cracker, and I have had several opportunities to meet with Rotarians of clubs in Oxfordshire. Colleges at Oxford facilitate a social community with dinners and get-togethers. My college, Kellogg College, hosted a Thanksgiving Dinner that I attended and they managed to get almost all the meal staples, except for the interesting and daring twist of a cranberry pie in place of pumpkin. As far as communication challenges there haven't been so many except for a slight difference in vocabulary. Although we did have a guest lecture by an Irish professor once and most of the time his accent was completely unintelligible to me - luckily they gave out class notes! I also officially matriculated and wore our required Oxford subfusc attire.

Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper

I've attached a few photos. I attended my host Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper's holiday meal where I met the president and presented to her the Nevada City club banner, which she was very excited to receive.
