Goodness, fall is in the air. The mornings are chilly, but the afternoons are great for adventure. I’m looking forward to hearing about the cleanup of the Wildflower Ridge area.
No, the bike is not Jim’s. He is taking it for repairs to be recycled.
On Thursday we heard from Ken Ching – I remember purchasing my first child’s nursery items and stroller from a Baby News store in the San Jose area – Ken had a similar store in Southern California early in his career. Did you know that Ken is also our club’s Sergeant of Arms? He arrives early at our lunch meetings and brings up our lectern, table, and signage and then stays late to put everything away. Thank you for your service to our Club, Ken! If you’d like to give a helping hand, just let Ken know.
This week we will have an interesting talk about our part in the climate issues in our area. I’m looking forward to hearing about what I can do to help slow environmental change. We will be inducting a new club member – Andrea Mason – and celebrating several Rotary Foundation achievements.
I’m excited about our Pumpkin Auction coming up at our social on Oct 19. Would you like to make it a celebration of Halloween and come in costume? On Oct. 5th we have Walt’s craft talk which should be very interesting, It may be an experience for many of our members’ families who came from another country during times of strife.
Don’t forget to RSVP for our lunch meeting even if you are not eating – we want to make sure we have enough seats setup for the gathering. Until then, enjoy!

Members of our Environmental Sustainability Committee spent the morning at BYLT’s Wildflower Ridge Preserve as part of South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) Annual Clean Up Day. Chris, Walt, Jim and Robin joined two crews let by BYLT staff Kate Gazzo and Shaun Clarke. The teams hauled out a managerie of discarded items from the property — filling three pickup loads — as well as pulled piles of invasive Scotch Broom and blackberry vines from along the trails.
And Carolyn and Nancy did a cleanup on Nevada City Rotary's Miners Trail!
We are ready to start picking selected pumpkins and talking about World Polio Day October 24 and a Pumpkin Auction as we lead up to it. Watch for creative thinking! In the meanwhile, join us on Tuesday mornings to care for our plants from 7:30 a.m. (or what time works for you) until about 9:30 a.m. Contact Cathy if you can help at BakBraken Acres, 14283 Judy Lane (off Powerline) in Chicago Park.
