We had a fascinating program at our meeting on August 22. Grass Valley City Council Member Tom Ivy spoke about his vision for a biomass fuel program. The City of Grass Valley is looking into being the lead organization in partnership with Pioneer Community Energy for the development of a small biomass generation facility. Currently, biomass must be transferred to a facility down the hill in Lincoln. Reasons to consider a local biomass facility are because the cost of green waste is a home insurance cost driver, it would allow for local disposal of green waste and organic waste and provides renewable electricity. The concept would help manage our forests where we love to live in a responsible, renewable manner.

Our own Tom Ryan was Commodore of the Rotary Yachting Fellowship. Boatowners planned several trips in the Los Angeles area and multi-day trips to Catalina. Cruisers would contact each other and learn about local flare. He had a great time doing it!
I challenge each of you to check out the link and join a fellowship! I’m a member of the Rotary Tea Lovers Fellowship. A few weeks ago, I received a gift of some lovely tea and the label was written in Chinese. I asked the fellowship if anyone could translate and got not only a translation but a commentary on the quality of the tea within an hour. I’ve learned that tea is the second most popular beverage in the world. Many different countries have different kinds of tea and ceremonies. Rotarians use tea as a way to build friendship and sharing across cultures.
And, while I’m thinking about tea, please get out your devices and mark your calendars for Sunday, March 16, 2025 from 3:30 – 5:30 PM when we will be hosting the Area 4 Foundation Tea.
We’re dark for the fifth Thursday on August 29 but we’re far from idle. Please continue mining in your junk drawers, home offices and garages for our Lithium-Ion battery “Recover and Recycle Rechargeables” September 21 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Rood Center. Also, remember it’s all-hands-on-deck for our new FUNdraiser, Paws and a Cause on October 20 at Pioneer Park.

A crew of 11 Nevada City Rambling Rotarians and family friends hit the DS (Ditch South if you really want to know) trail off Red Dog on a cool, sunny Sunday morning with a trio of furry friends. An easy, flat ramble for new knees, hips, hearts, and die-hards.

The Rotary Club of Nevada City is excited to announce the details of our 3rd annual three “R” event to collect, recycle and repurpose rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and devices on Saturday, September 21, 10am - 2pm in partnership with Redwood Materials at the Rood Center in Nevada City.
The public can drop off Lithium-ion rechargeable devices and batteries for recycling by Redwood Materials, a company that recycles the minerals and uses them to make new rechargeable batteries. Eligible items include cellphones, tablets, laptops, electric toothbrushes, e-shavers, vapes, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, power tool batteries, video game controllers, etc. Click for accepted items list.
