We had a wonderful program at our meeting on February 13 at Bodhi-Hive. Jeff Dellis, Project Coordinator for the Nevada County Youth Commission, the Nevada County Citizens’ Academy and NJUHSD Career Technical Education (CTE) was on hand with Mackenzie, Nevada Union Student Body President and 2-term chairperson of the Youth Commission. The mission of the Youth Commission is to connect resources with need in Nevada County. In 2023 their focus was on recreation, CTE, Mental Health and Nutrition. In 2024, focus on recreation and CTE and emergency preparedness has been added.
NJUHSD has 14 career pathways and this program has enabled students to be placed in internships throughout the county. Students are working in the Office of Emergency Services, Environmental Health and the Building Department. MacKenzie is currently doing her internship at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. She has been through rotations in ambulance, laboratory, telemetry and surgery so far. Working with Sierra College, a new Certified Nursing Assistant program will begin in the fall. Kudos to the County of Nevada and the Nevada Joint Union High School District for creative ways to prepare students for the workforce here in beautiful Nevada County.
In addition to all of the above, Mackenzie is a proud member of the Interact Club at Nevada Union. Interact Clubs are sponsored by local Rotary Clubs and bring together people ages 12 -18 and empower them to develop leadership skills and learn the power of Service Above Self. The NU Interact Club is sponsored by our friends at the 49er Breakfast Rotary Club. Our club sponsors the Interact Club at Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning in downtown Nevada City. If you like to run, walk or walk with your dog, mark your calendar for the second annual Harmonious Wolf foot race to be held on May 17! More details will follow. For more information about these young Rotarians all over the world visit Interact Clubs.
