Greetings members and friends,

Community Service for Dementia:  Following our Heart
This past Saturday, Bob and I had second row seats for a wonderful concert by the Four Bridges String Quartet at Brunswick Village Assisted Living.  This concert was offered as a community service by Music on Wheels from InConcert Sierra. The audience - of mostly residents with some degree of dementia - was very appreciative. Few of them would would be able to attend such a concert at the 7th Day Adventist Church where InConcert Sierra performs, or at a public theatre.

In Rotary, we have many, many choices of community service individually, with our club, at the District 5190 level, and worldwide. For example, as individuals we can support and become members of the Alzheimer’s / Dementia Rotary Action Group. We could provide ourselves and others with the latest scientific information about these diseases. The $25 annual membership contribution helps support projects on dementia and Alzheimers. Our club could also join other clubs in a related project whether locally or in another part of the world. Click the banner to see the RAG webpage for details.

Given our spontaneous discussion on this topic at the June 1 social meeting, it might be an appropriate community service to organize in Nevada City Rotary. If this speaks to your heart, we recommend you join the RAG and use what you learn to help others.

Yours in Rotary Service,
Carolyn (and Chris)

Welcome Tally Gould
Nevada City Rotary was pleased to induct Tally Gould as our newest member.  A native of Western Nevada County, Tally is Branch Manager for First US Community Credit Union in Grass Valley.  Tally is shown with her sponsor Pearce Boyer, Co-President Carolyn, Cathy Wilcox-Barnes who inducted her, and her husband Colton.

Our Club members — especially Tally — were honored to have First US Community Credit Union CEO and fellow Rotarian, Shonna Shearson and Regional Vice President Patricia Shepherd celebrating Tally’s induction with us.

Growing Pumpkins for Polio

Pumpkin starts are in the ground!

Big thanks to Cathy Wilcox-Barnes and John Drew owner of BakBraken Acres for creating a special partnership so our Club can grow Pumpkins for Polio. Cathy grew the young pumpkin starts this spring. Farmer John, Chris Newsom, Walt and Sandy Stickel, Cathy's grandson Aidan and even little Tuco joined Cathy in Chicago Park digging in the dirt to plant pumpkins on May 30. Cathy and Robin were out last week to weed and care for our plants. The pumpkins in the field are currently being hand watered (largely by Farmer John) so we are eager to install irrigation.

We plan to go out again on Tuesday morning June 13 to care for our plants and work on irrigation from 7:30 a.m. until about 9:30 a.m. Contact Cathy if you can join her at BakBraken Acres at 14283 Judy Lane (off Powerline) in Chicago Park.

Each week we add photos of progress. Click to visit our Pumpkins for Polio photo album and slideshow. Continue reading to learn about our plans to support Rotary’s End Polio Now.
