We were back at Bodhi-Hive on January 23 where we heard from Amber Jo Manual, Executive Director of The Center for the Arts. We learned about the impact of the arts on our economy nationally, statewide and locally. In 2022, the arts contributed 4.3% of the US Gross Domestic Product. In California that is 7.7%. The COVID Pandemic impacts to performing arts were drastic. Performing arts, non-governmental museums and art-based construction are among the industries that have not recovered. Nevertheless, growth in youth programs has dramatically increased for the Center. Through after school and summer classes, the student matinee series and the Main Stage Productions over 3000 youth have been served. In the visual arts, the Center held 11 exhibitions showcasing 295 artists and 162 student artwork pieces. The Center for the Arts is indeed a rare and precious gem in our wonderful rural community. Amber Jo let us know how we can help: donate, buy a ticket to a show, donate to the scholarship fund for student classes or attend an art gallery reception. Many thanks to The Center for the Arts staff for bringing us such wonderful opportunities to educate and entertain our community.
In 1945, in My Road to Rotary, Paul Harris expressed the importance of vocation. He said, “Each Rotarian is a connecting link between the idealism of Rotary and his trade or profession.” I think that means that in our vocations and business practices we embody the values of “The 4 Way Test”. Like me, perhaps many of you, joined Rotary for the networking and community. I have received so much more.
For many of us, there is a moment in time, a relationship or a project when we shift from being a “Rotary Member” to a “Real Rotarian.” In the wise words of The Velveteen Rabbit, “Love Makes you Real.” Rotary Rob is here to remind us to get real and join in one or more of our many service projects. The second half of Rotary Year 24-25 is full of service, fellowship and fun. Cathy, Walt, Tom R, Paula, Kelly, and Dave planted more bulbs in Penzance Park this weekend.

Give a gift that truly keeps on giving ~ fostering literacy among Nevada County’s youngest residents!
Nevada City Rotary is proud to launch Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Nevada County in the coming months. “Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is dedicated to inspiring a love of reading by gifting books free of charge to children from birth to age five, through funding shared by Dolly Parton and local community partners.” Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write, Dolly started her Imagination Library in 1995 to foster a love of reading among her county’s young children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month.
Board Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month. Our January 13 meeting is at 5:30pm to better accommodate schedules among our new board. It will be via Zoom with President Louise.
