Greetings members and friends,

As we’re approaching the end of one Rotary year (June 30) and looking toward another, it’s a good time to review how each of us can be involved with our Club’s activities while following our passion. Our Club has a variety of Areas of Service, each with its own committee and chair.  Some of you have already accepted positions of leadership for the upcoming year; but for those of you who haven’t and are wondering … ”How can I serve while doing something I love?”… look over the list of service committees in Doug’s article below about Making Plans for 2023-2024 and choose an area that interests you.  Got an idea for a service project?  Contact the committee chair that fits best!

We had a fun social gathering last Thursday at Round Table Pizza.  Now we’re ready for another lunch meeting at TJ’s Roadhouse in Nevada City. We’ll be hearing from Aimee Retzler of Sierra Harvest, and will learn how this amazing organization has revolutionized school lunches in our area. We will also induct Mai Lee as our newest member! Please join us this Thursday May 25, before 12:15, and remember to RSVP HERE!

Yours in Rotary Service,
Chris (and Carolyn)

Making Plans for 2023-24
Your 2023-24 Board met on a recent Saturday morning to make plans for the next Rotary year. Hosted at Doug and Karen McDonald's home in Lake Wildwood, 12 Nevada City Rotarians met to review service projects, activities and goals for next year (and have lunch!). Co-presidents Cathy Wilcox-Barnes, Karen McDonald and Doug McDonald led the discussion, and all the Directors had a chance to review their goals and plan the budget.

Thanks to Club Service Director Judy Soldavani, Public Image Director Walt Stickel, Vocations Director Nicole Dillard, Youth Services Director Louise Johnson, The Rotary Foundation Director Lynda Guthrie, Environmental Sustainability Director Chris Newsom, and Treasurer Tom Ryan for their participation. Not able to attend were Community Service Director Dan Foss, Membership Director Dennis Geare, International Service Chair Carolyn Feuille and Secretary Robin Milam.

We are looking forward to a great year of service in wide-ranging areas of interest to our club members!
Trex bench on Noel Carter Loop
This week Nevada City Rotary and Bear Yuba Land Trust partnered to place our Trex bench at a scenic overlook along the Noel Carter Loop of the Orene Wetherall Trail. The trail is in the Land Trust’s Woodpecker Preserve on Banner Mountain. Access to the trail and preserve is off the Cascade Canal near the Gracie Road parking lot. Chris Newsom and Shaun Clarke, Public Recreation Stewardship Manager for BYLT are both enjoying a scenic sojourn after installing the bench.

Nevada City Rotary took the lead in starting our stretchable plastics recycling program over a year and a half ago.  With our first 500 lbs of plastics collected and given to Trex Company, Inc. through their NexTrex Recycling program, we earned a Trex bench.

Area 4 Foundation Dinner June 12, 2023
A favorite annual tradition among the five Rotary Clubs of District 5190 Area 4 is a joint celebration of The Rotary Foundation and our collective project accomplishments. It is also an opportunity to celebrate and honor those who through their generosity have achieved Paul Harris Fellow levels.

Grass Valley Rotary will be hosting a simplified version of the Foundation Recognition Dinner on Monday June 12th at the Wild Eye Pub in Grass Valley. The event is free to attend and attendees can order directly off the Wild Eye Pub regular menu and pay the restaurant directly.  Reservations are requested by June 7th.

Nevada City Rotary looks forward to celebrating our newest Triple Crown Donor Cathy Wilcox-Barnes, Paul Harris Fellows, and Global Scholar Wrenn Cleary. Watch for more details.
