Hello Nevada City Rotarians and Friends!

Did you know that in the United States 1 in 5 children live below the poverty line? Did you know that 50% of the children and youth in Nevada County are on MediCAL, or that 1 in 20 experience homelessness in one form or another. We had a wonderful field trip to Bright Futures for Youth (BFFY) on October 3, an organization whose mission it is to address these issues. BFFY has three major programs and serves over 500 youth weekly. NEO hosts after school connections with games, music, art and food. The Friendship Club serves young women with food, workshops, mentors, college tours and more. The SAFE program is connecting youth experiencing homelessness with food, clothing and help accessing resources.

Rotary Clubs in Nevada County have long been supportive of these efforts. Through a multi-club grand Rotary helped fund the café and ADA upgrades. A team of 5 Nevada City Rotarians built an outdoor pergola. If you didn’t have a chance to go on our field trip, BFFY will be hosting an open house on October 22. It is always so rewarding to see the results of our efforts at work changing lives.

Pop Quiz: Why does Louise carry around that silly pink rabbit all of the time? (A) He’s her emotional support rabbit. (B) The Rotary International Theme for the 24-25 Rotary Year is “The Magic of Rotary. She pulled him out of a hat to honor the theme. (C) His name is Rotary Rob and he loves all things Rotary. (D) All of the above.

We’re looking forward to hearing from Erin Tarr, the Executive Director of the Bear Yuba Land Trust at our October 10 lunch meeting. Please RSVP! Did you know we have the trifecta of watershed advocacy in the Nevada City Rotary Club with SYRCL (South Yuba River Citizens’ League), Sierra Streams Institute and the Bear Yuba Land Trust all represented within our membership.

Then on October 17 we will have our club Pumpkins for Polio event at our social at Round Table Pizza at 5:30. The harvest is rich this year and the artists are busy painting beautiful creative pumpkins.  Wear a costume if you wish and bring your checkbook; let’s meet our Polio goal for Rotary International.

It’s all hands-on deck for Paws and a Cause on Sunday, October 20 from 12:30-4:30 with setup starting around 9:30am. It’s shaping up to be a tail wagging good time for our new FUNdraiser. We’ll need you each to sign up for a volunteer job and sell tickets. Tickets are $20 for a dog with a family of up to 4. Unaccompanied humans are $5. Many thanks to Robin for coordinating and the hard work of the committee. It’s sure to be a tail wagging fun time for all!

Your President,
Louise
