Dear Nevada City Rotarians and Friends!

We had a wonderful impromptu craft talk at our social on November 7. Poett Ryan is here visiting from Costa Rica. She gave us an update about Jack who is going to school in Florida. He’s doing well in school and playing varsity soccer! We learned about living in Costa Rica and how much it is changing from rural small towns to development for second homes. She went to a one room schoolhouse in rural Costa Rica as a child. The contrast with the California Yacht Club dinners was striking. She told us about growing up with Tom who is a wonderful musician. He plays bass guitar and his real talent is singing. We were treated to a duet of “Silver Wings” that they sang together. This was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Tom and his family. We are grateful to Poett for stepping right up to share with us.

November is Rotary International’s Foundation Month. When we donate to the Annual Fund, The Rotary Foundation holds the funds for 3 years and uses the interest for operating costs and then the funds come back to the district for matching grants. We have two grant applications in the process for this Rotary Year. We have a single club application called, “Young Professionals for Rotary” to host two outreach meetings for young professionals in our community in the spring. Big thanks to Seven Holt, Mai Lee and Robin Milam for putting it together. We also are participating in a multi-club grant to collect donations of used musical instruments and have them repaired if needed and donated to our local middle schools. Grass Valley South is taking the lead on this one and all 5 Western Nevada County Rotary Clubs are involved. Stay tuned for more information.

We’re looking forward to hearing from Judy East about the Sierra College Foundation at our lunch meeting on November 14. We’ll be back at Bohdi Hive, 420 Providence Mine Rd in Nevada City at 12:15pm on Thursday. Your choice of ham & cheese, turkey or vegetable sandwiches with chips are $10 each. Please RSVP with your lunch order by Wednesday at 10am to meet SPD's order window.

Andrea Mason will do her craft talk at our social on November 21. We’re dark for the Thanksgiving Holiday and then will celebrate with our Holiday Party on Monday, December 2.

Grateful for all of you!

Your President,

Louise

Victorian Christmas Helpers 2024

‘Tis the Season to be Jolly!

The holidays are fast approaching, and with them comes a unique opportunity for Community Service. We did such a good job last year, our Community Services Director (Chief Dan Foss) has once again asked the Rotary Club of Nevada City to help at the Victorian Christmas Events.

The dates/times are Sunday afternoons, Dec. 8, 15, and 22 from 1:00-3:30pm and 3:30-6:00pm, and Wednesday evenings, December 11 and 18 from 4:30-6:30pm and 6:30-9:00pm. Rotarians typically go out in groups of two, with special NCPD safety vests, to mingle with the crowds and give information, if asked, on such things as where the bathrooms are, etc. There will be a short 10-minute orientation for each shift and Rotarians are welcome to return to City Hall to warm up, eat cookies, and rest, as needed. Cathy will be circulating a signup sheet at the meetings leading up to the event(s) or you can sign up at Victorian Christmas 2024 Sign Up.
