Dear Rotarians,
Cathy and I wish to thank you for the wonderful demotion party. It has been such an honor to serve as your co-president. Many thanks to Carolyn and Chris for leading their committee with Judy and support from Tom Ryan, Robin, Peter Newsom, and other club members. I know the amount of work and talent that goes into the development and execution of a grand plan; we are honored by the event and the gifts. The gifts were too much; I have already enjoyed some of my gift certificates – Mexican food and a good children’s book are wonderful. Truly, thank you for your special words and generous gifts.
We encourage you to join us this Thursday for Chris Newsom's insightful craft talk at our Social. Arriving early will give you the opportunity to order your dinner and a drink, settle in, and enjoy some fellowship. We look forward to seeing you at Roundtable Pizza at 5:30.
Louise and the 2024-2025 Board will hold a retreat at her home on Saturday, June 22. We are looking forward to Louise’s leadership, wisdom, and knowledge. I know Cathy and I are looking forward to listening to the bell being rung instead of ringing the bell ourselves.
Remember to check out the newsletter for information on signing up for Hot Summer Nights, participating in the backpack for students, and our last lunch meeting program on Los Barriles.
With warm summer days ahead we have a unique opportunity for Community Service. Our Community Services Director (Chief Dan Foss) has asked the Rotary Club of Nevada City to help at the Hot Summer Nights Event.
The dates/times are: Wednesday evenings, July 17, 24 and 31, 2024.
Thank you in advance for being Rotarians in Action! Questions or want to signup the old fashioned way, contact Cathy (2cwb@sbcglobal.net or (530) 263-2496) and she’ll add you to the list.
Once again, Nevada County Child Support Services, in collaboration with Community Beyond Violence, is thrilled to announce our 4th Annual Backpack and School Supply Drive! Last year Nevada City and other Rotarians donated backpacks, supplies and cash to support the Annual Backpack and School Supply Drive. The drive distributed 198 backpacks. This year, their goal is to reach 300 backpacks.
You can help achieve this milestone and have Nevada County students show up for their first day a school proud of their new backpacks and supplies. Contribute in whatever way you want -- donate an empty backpack or one filled with supplies; donate just supplies or make a cash donation. Biggest need is for supplies - especially binders and markers - and cash donations to fill packs on hand by July 15!
One load of 140 pounds of stretchable plastics Jim Bair picked up from Briar Patch on a sunny day in June 2024 is buldging from his SUV as he unloads at SaveMart. Nevada City Rotary took the lead to partner with Trex Company, Inc. to recycle stretchable plastics that Waste Management (aka WM) will not accept. The public response has been amazing! In less than 9 months we collected over 4,000 lbs -- 2 tons of plastics. Now several years later we are approaching 15,000 lbs and are looking for a sustainable County wide solution to this recycling issue.
The growing amount of plastics being put in our bins presents an unsustainable demand on our Club. We are working on how to turn over and/or end this project gracefully in the coming months.
Board Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month. Our next meeting will be July 8 at 4:00pm via Zoom with President Louise and our new Board!
Not a Board member but want to join us? Contact Robin or reply to this Rotario for instructions. All club members are encouraged to attend a meeting. Location subject to change, please ask.
