Dear Nevada City Rotarians and Friends

We were amazed and awestruck at our social on June 19 where PDG Dave Denney treated us to his magic show. Except to tell you that he pulled Rotary Rob, a bouquet of flowers, an egg and a glass of milk out of a hat all at once, I’m not going to give up any of Dave’s tricks. His craft talk about magic was threaded throughout the show. Dave first became interested in magic from his grandfather who was an active Rotarian and Nebraska state legislator. He loved practical jokes and introduced Dave to the magic store. Dave did his first magic show when he was 8 years old at a talent show and made it into the Lincoln Journal newspaper. He went on to the county fair. Dave went to Exeter Academy in New Hampshire for high school. He did magic shows for his classmates and professors and pulled a missing scarf belonging to one of his professors out of a hat. After high school Dave went to the US Naval Academy where he did shows for parents and midshipmen. As a Rotarian, he has done magic shows and noted that kids get so excited. In Uganda they had to ask him to stop because the kids kept running up and disrupting the dental clinic in progress. He’s performed at a variety of Rotary events during which Carolyn Feuille, like RID (then DG) Vicki Puliz, trusted him enough to put her arm into the vegetable chopper. Dave and Gayle have given their granddaughter a magic kit and “she’s getting pretty good,” carrying on the tradition. What a great way to continue to bring our “Magic of Rotary” year to an end. Big thanks to PDG Dave for sharing your talent with us!

June is Fellowship Month with Rotary International. Rotary brings us into fellowship with others all over the world. As we come to a close, I want to shout out again Rotary International President, Stephanie Urchick. With our theme for the year, “The Magic of Rotary” we have all had a wonderful time this year with our club, our Area 4, our District 5190 and beyond. Stephanie’s home club is the Rotary Club of McMurray, Pennsylvania which is near Pittsburg. She is a huge sports fan and I didn’t notice it until someone pointed out that our Magic of Rotary logo, pins, banners secretly have the Pittsburg Steelers stars soaring skyward in magic! I hope to visit the Rotary Club of McMurray when I go home to Pennsylvania on a future visit! Here’s Stephanie announcing her theme for our year, Stephanie Urchick celebrates the magic of Rotary.

We’ll be back at Bodhi-Hive for our lunch meeting at 12:15pm. Please order lunch by Wed 10am. Our speaker will be Dianne Meisler speaking about Alternatives to Violence. Then, 2025-26 President, Pearce Boyer, will take over the helm and we’ll start with a Red, White and Blue social on July 3 at 5:30pm at Round Table Pizza. Have a wonderful year, Pearce and all the members and friends of Nevada City Rotary. It has been my joy to serve you!

Your President,

Louise

2025 Pumpkins for Polio
Earlier this year the Nevada City Council approved a creative, visionary proposal by City Manager Sean Grayson and Cathy for the City, Chamber of Commerce, and merchants of Nevada City, in partnership with Nevada City Rotary, to host a very special city-wide Nevada City Pumpkins for Polio event this fall. Merchants will be displaying painted pumpkins in their windows around town. Judy is planning special pumpkin painting classes for September to prepare the city and local artists for our October pumpkin extravaganza.

Cathy, Tom, Judy and George have been the dedicated force behind getting an abundant crop of pumpkins planted for this year’s project. Cathy put out a call for assistance and Saturday morning Paula, Walt, Gloria and Robin joined the crew to get much of the irrigation lines installed. As the summer unfolds, the pumpkin plants need tender care and attention. Watch this space for more opportunities to participate and here for photos!
