Dear Nevada City Rotarians and Friends,

At our social on February 6 weheard from GV South Rotary Club President, Laura Armacher, spoke to us about our Area 4 Multi-Club Project. We are collecting used musical instruments to be distributed to local middle schools. Another important need for our middle schools is funds for instrument repair. This is emerging as a very high need among our middle schools because repairs are very expensive and school budgets are stretched for other needs. After our first donation day on Saturday at Lyman Gilmore, we have collected 125 or so instruments of all sorts. Please stay tuned for more to come. Click the photo to view our Photo Album.

Also, at our social we were delighted to greet our SAEL Interact President, Yousef, and Secretary, Lillith. They let us know that their annual Harmonious Wolf Foot Race fundraiser running race will be held on Saturday, May 17 at the Harmony Ridge Trail. There will be 1 mile, a 5K and a 10K races. Humans and their dogs are invited to participate.

February is Rotary International’s Peace and Conflict Prevention month. At  the Peace Conference in Rohnert Park in January, one of my favorite speakers weas Wade Nomura from the Rotary Club of Carpinteria. A child of two Hiroshima survivors, he said, “Peace is not acceptance. It is appreciation.”  While over 150,000 people died at Hiroshima a beautiful tree came back from the nuclear exposure. This “Peace Tree” has been propagated with descendants being planted all around the world. Rotarian Nomura reminded us that, “Peace will come if we help others.” Click the image for a brief video about promoting peace through Rotary.

On February 13, we’ll be back at Bodhi-Hive at 12:15. Our speakers will be Jeff Dellis, Project Coordinator, and NU senior Mackenzie, founding member and two term chairperson of the Nevada County Youth Commission. They will update us about the Nevada County Youth Commission, the Nevada County Citizens’ Academy and a collaborative partnership between Nevada County and Nevada Joint Union High School District for Career Technical Education programs for students.

Then, on February 20 we’ll have our evening social at 5:30 PM at Round Table Pizza in Grass Valley. We’re looking forward to hearing a craft talk about Judy Soldavinin from George Roberts, frequent guest at our club. Let’s all come out for these two great programs!

Peace In Rotary,

Your President,

Louise
