Update on Child Advocates of Nevada County

Child Advocates ~ Empowering and protecting children of Nevada CountyWe advocate for the wellbeing of children by disrupting cycles of abuse, giving children a voice, and supporting families in raising healthy children. Nicole McNeely has served as the Executive Director of Child Advocates of Nevada County (CANC) since the fall of 2022, where she leads the organization’s strategic vision, fundraising, and community partnerships. During her tenure, she has strengthened board governance, guided long-term planning, and increased the organization’s budget through expanded donor engagement and government contract support. Nicole previously served as Executive Director of the Food Bank of Nevada County, leading the organization through the height of COVID-19, Snowmageddon, and multiple other community-wide disasters. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics Education from Chico State and completed the Executive Director Academy through the Center for Nonprofit Leadership in 2023. A lifelong Nevada County resident of 45 years, Nicole is the proud mom of three boys and is deeply committed to advocating for children and families in her community.
Melinda Douros graduated from Stanford University with a degree in English Literature and an abiding interest in mentoring, nurturing, and educating young people. She has been active in various youth and educational organizations while raising five children, both biological and adopted, with her husband of 45 years. Acquainted with the challenges of trauma, loss, and grief in the lives of children, Melinda has pursued training opportunities in related fields of knowledge for over 25 years. Melinda served on the Board of Directors for Heartsent Adoptions, Inc. for 16 years and in 2010 joined the staff of Child Advocates of Nevada County. After directing the Child Safety Puppeteers program for two years, she moved to the position of Program Manager for CASA where she has served since. Her focus remains on providing a well-trained, supported, effective, and committed CASA for every child who needs one. Melinda also serves as chair of the Juvenile Justice/ Delinquency Prevention Commission for Nevada County and is a member of the Critical Incidents Citizen's Review Panel for the state of CA. Anne Greco trained to become a CASA volunteer 14 years ago and has served 8 foster youth, aged 3 to 18, as a volunteer. In 2015 she joined the staff of Child Advocates as a CASA Case Manager, where she supervised foster youth advocacy in dependency court. In 2019, Nevada County joined one of the few programs in California to serve delinquency youth, which Anne developed with local judges, the DA’s office and probation. Today, she is the Youth Justice Program Manager. In addition to managing and continuing to build the delinquency side of the CASA program, Anne oversees a new program, called One 2 One, which focuses on prevention and serves at-risk youth who are referred by schools and community partners. |

Celine Negrete is the General Manager of the Onyx Theatre in Nevada City, where she has led operations for the past 16 years. With a background in arts management and hospitality, she has helped shape the Onyx into a beloved cultural hub for film lovers. She also serves on the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce board, the Nevada City Public Arts Commission, and the Rüdiger Foundation board, and previously served for more than ten years on two local school boards. She and her husband moved from San Francisco to Grass Valley in 2004, where they raised their two sons. |

Nevada City Rotary is again returning to Los Barriles, Baja Sur California, MX. Each year our Club partners with the Rotary Club of Los Barriles Cabo Este and East Cape Health Clinic to host multiple wellness clinics in the Los Barriles area. Students are screened for diabetes, eye sight, dental, respiratory, and skeletal issues along with overall wellness checks.
Fly in and out of Cabo San Lucas. Participate in multiple days of wellness clinics shoulder to shoulder with fellow Rotarians from the US and Baja along with time for recreation in the beach community of Los Barriles.

Mike Bratton, long-time State Farm Insurance Agenda will speak on "the Future of Insurance in California." Mike has been a local State Farm Agent since 1984. A graduate from Chico State University with a BA in communications/marketing, Mike is a highly recognized State Farm agent and generous community member. Over the years his agency has qualified for State Farm Awards including State Farm Legion of Honor, State Farm Ambassador for Life, State Farm Life Honor Club, State Farm SVP Club, and State Farm President’s Club. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and an Active Rotarian with the Nevada City 49er Breakfast Club. Protecting our community as a Firefighting Pilot

Abbie Crews is one of the few female firefighting air tanker pilots. Before she was hired to pilot CAL FIRE’s S-2Ts out of Grass Valley, California she graduated from the Air Force Academy and flew MC12s and C-17s. Abbie Crews grew up in Girdwood Alaska and Boulder Colorado. She graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy with a BS in Systems Engineering and from the University of Oklahoma with an MA in Administrative Leadership. After receiving her Commission as an officer in the Air Force, and completing pilot training, she flew in the Air Force for 8 additional years. During this time, she was deployed and flew combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. After Separating from the Air Force in 2015 she flew in Afghanistan on intelligence missions as a contract pilot. Currently she is an air tanker pilot for CalFire, flying the Grumman S2 out of Grass Valley Air Attack Base. Abbie lives in Nevada City with her Husband Orion, 18-month-old daughter Gunnison and dog Tucker. They enjoy mountain biking, skiing, and kite boarding and are core members of our local trail building organization - Bicyclists of Nevada County. |

Agriculture education at the Ranch

The School RanchStudents from NJUHSD and Bear River High School now have the opportunity to gain practical experience in agriculture at “The Ranch,” an 86-acre working ranch recently donated to the district. The School Ranch provides a unique outdoor classroom where students can engage in real-world hands-on agricultural training. Address: 13765 Chukar Drive, Grass Valley If you are coming from Grass Valley, you can take the exit toward the fairgrounds and follow McCourtney Road until you reach Chukar on the right-hand side, just before the old Country Store. Chukar 6.6 miles down McCourtney from the Fairgrounds. It is the 2nd right turn, less than 1/4 mile, past Clear Creek School. If you pass the Country Store, you missed the turn onto Chukar. From Grass Valley, the drive typically takes about 15 minutes. There is plenty of parking available, so you should be just fine, and carpooling is not necessary unless your group prefers to do so. This year, we are partnering with Peace Lutheran Church as they do their regular CRV bottles/cans collection event, on Saturday May 30. The public can make it a one-stop recycling day at the church to drop off your CRV bottles and cans (along with plastic #1, 2, and 5) with the Church team, then leave all your Lithium Ion (rechargeable) devices and batteries with our Rotary team. Eligible items include cell phones, tablets, laptops, electric toothbrush handles, e-shavers, vapes, wireless headphones and earbuds, Bluetooth speakers, power tool batteries, e-bike batteries, video game controllers, etc.

Update on Uganda project

Dr. Scott Kellermann, a fellow Rotarian and California-based physician specializing in tropical medicine, and his wife Carol, an educator, founded the Kellermann Foundation in 2004. Dr. Kellermann is the recipient of several awards, including Unsung Heroes of Compassion award by the Dalai Lama and the American Medical Association’s Dr. Nathan Davis International Award in Medicine. Both Scott and Carol received the Nashotah House Theological Seminary’s Michael Ramsey Award in recognition of their distinguished ministry in Uganda. The Kellermann Foundation is dedicated to supporting the displaced Batwa pygmies in all areas of development and to provide high-quality healthcare to the Batwa and their neighbors in southwest Uganda. Scott and Carol Kellermann arrived in Uganda in 2000 to conduct a medical survey of the Batwa pygmies. Their findings were alarming, but through their vision and your support, a region is being transformed. Health Care: The 155-bed full-service hospital is ranked among the best in Uganda. Its services include medical and surgical care, a colorful pediatric ward, a neonatal unit for premature or sick infants, demonstration gardens, a Waiting Mothers’ Hostel where expectant mothers can stay before giving birth safely at the hospital, and much more. Community health programs bring mobile clinics to remote settlements, treat local residents, and educate all local citizens about the value of good nutrition, prenatal care, and how to prevent diseases, including malaria and HIV/AIDS. Nursing Education: With an annual enrollment approaching 400 students, we provide the only RN-level three year degree in the region empowering Ugandans to improve rural healthcare. |

Launching 2026-2027 and Returning Organics to Nature

Welcome Area 4 Club Presidents and installation of 2026-2027 Board with President Andrea! In the Nevada City Rotary spirit of supporting innovative, young entrepreneurs, we are excited to have Jesse Hicks as our guest speaker. Jesse is an entreprenuer, film maker, and Nevada City native business founder of Returning Organics to Nature (ROTN). Jesse will present how ROTN builds an essential organics infrastructure for the next generation. Jesse Hicks is a Nevada County native, creative director, entrepreneur, and founder of ROTN (Return Organics to Nature), an initiative to develop Nevada County’s first commercial-scale organics recycling and composting facility. Through ROTN, he is working to demonstrate that businesses can be both economically successful and climate-positive, creating local prosperity while addressing global environmental challenges. Jesse arrived at this work through a career in brand strategy, communications, and storytelling, having led brand, content, and experiential campaigns for global companies designed to engage broad audiences and shape cultural conversation. Previously, he served as COO of a multi-state cannabis company and now works as a Vice President of brand and communications, translating complex ideas into compelling, culture-first, human stories. He studied at Columbia University and spent more than a decade living and working in New York City and Los Angeles before returning home to Nevada County with his family. Jesse currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Nevada County Community Foundation, where he is committed to strengthening the long-term vitality and resilience of the community he calls home. ROTN is Nevada County's first municipal scale compost facility, regional infrastructure processing mixed organic material locally—reducing emissions, promoting wildfire safety by mitigating fuel load, and returning value to our soil and community. ROTN builds essential organics infrastructure for the next generation...We are an essential facility responsibly recycling our community’s organic waste.
We are a cornerstone in the effort to mitigate fuel load and build wildfire resilience.
