Dear Rotarians and Friends,
A BIG OOPS for those who read carefully -- so sorry!
We are back on our regular THURSDAY schedule this week.
THURSDAY August 15, 2019 5:30pm Social
We are back at Trolley Junction!
Beth Volz - Community Beyond Violence
Trolley Junction Restaurant at The Northern Queen
400 Railroad Avenue, Nevada City, CA 95959
From the top of my fog-filled brain to the bottom of my tired toes, I thank all of the wonderful volunteers who contributed to a successful Fair Booth Fundraiser this year. You all ROCKED it! Rotarians, spouses, family and friends laughed, sweated, worked their tails off as we smashed last year’s record of sales Wednesday through Saturday.
What a team ...
... even if we went a bit stir crazy!
Our Friday night Ladies crew!
Sunday was still as crazy but in a different way as we tried to figure out new and creative ways to keep the booth open until 10:00 p.m. (thank you Tom and Robin Milam) as required by the Fair without anything to sell but coleslaw and drinks. Walt printed signs to say "Sorry we are out of pulled pork and shredded chicken." Robin quickly printed signs offering a coleslaw and any size drink for $5.00 and we rewarded customers with boats piled high with coleslaw. Tom M. came up with a coleslaw sandwich and said it was good but Nicole had a different take on it. Robin told customers we were going “vegetarian” for the last day of the Fair. People were good sports and had a good laugh -- it was nice to know we weren’t the only booth to run out.
All in all it was a great week. You gave 110% and it showed in your enthusiasm, professionalism as you worked at a break-neck pace and your exchanges with the public. What a great face of “Rotary” in our community. If you had family and friends that worked, please tell them how grateful I am for their Service Above Self and make sure to invite them back next year for more great memories. How many of you wore pulled pork home on your clothing in one spot or another? Come on, I know I’m not the only stain-magnet in our group am I?
And then came Sunday ... and finally closing time!
Want a historical perspective (or refresher) on our booth? Checkout this month's Nevada City Advocate (page 2) to read "Rotary Club to continue fair tradition" and see who you can identify in the 1983 photo of our Treat Street booth! Thank you Stacy!
This Week: Beth Volz, Outreach Support Specialist—Community Beyond Violence
So, the Fair is behind us but we can’t rest on our laurels yet. This week Beth Volz will share the extraordinary work of Community Beyond Violence (formerly Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalition DVASC)
Over the course of her 33-year career, Beth has worked in public relations and marketing communications for a variety of organizations, including PG&E, Kaiser Permanente, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Johnson & Johnson, and several Bay Area hospitals.
She has served on the boards—and volunteered for—many community and business organizations. Upon moving to Penn Valley from the Santa Cruz mountains three and a half years ago, she immediately served as newsletter editor and as a board member with Business and Professional Women of Nevada County, where she is currently the secretary of their scholarship committee.
One of Beth’s lifelong core values has been the importance of contributing to one’s community to help those in need improve their lives and those of their families. Joining Community Beyond Violence in December enables her to combine her love of community involvement and her PR skills to support local victims of abuse.
Next Week - District Governor Randy Van Tassell Meeting
At our August 22nd lunch meeting District Governor Randy Van Tassel will be our guest. The DG visit is always a special meeting and I really would like us to have a packed house to welcome him. The Executive Team will meet with him at 9:45am and the full Board at 10:45am before the meeting to update him on our plans for the year but the rest of the time he’s all yours. He’ll be answering your questions (so think of some good ones) and bringing us up-to-date on what’s happening in District 5190 and beyond. It’s also a great meeting to invite prospective members and spouses because they get a view of Rotary beyond our routine meetings and get a fresh look at how much Rotary does in local communities and around the world.
Schedule for DG Randy:
9:45am Executive Team (Cathy, Tom R, Carla, Robin)
10:45am Full Board
12:00pm Social time
12:15pm Club Meeting
Avenues of Service - September 28
But wait, there’s more….. September 28 is the Avenues of Service event in Reno. Our own Robin Milam has been working herself ragged (except for the week she lived at the Fair) putting together the top-notch breakout sessions. This is such a wonderful opportunity to learn about the area(s) of Rotary that you are serving in now or the ones that you may be interested in or ones that you don’t know about but that speak to your passion. I can’t encourage you enough to sign up. We’ll be carpooling up and I sure hope we can get 2 or 3 cars filled with eager attendees. Let’s give Robin the support and encouragement she deserves that day for the hard work she’s put in all year planning this. And we can gain as well as share our own creative ideas with other Clubs around our District.
