What a fun meeting we had last week! Plus we learned so
much about our club and our history. We went looking at the past
to get to our future with our own Cathy Wilcox-Barnes, baker and
historian. Cathy brought a wealth of information along with
cookies that would have been typical of the year our club was
chartered - 1935. Cathy has lots more history to share with us and
the hope is we will have a part 2 History Day.
Did
you know:Who Frank Finnigan was?
NC attorney and 1st NC Club "vice-president"
What places our club has met?
Coach House
Deer Creek Inn at the New York Hotel
Saddle & Sirloin at the National
The Bank Club
The Elks Club
What our Newsletter has been called?
The Miner
The Jackhammer
The Rotario
The member who has been a Rotarian the longest?
John Taylor since 1956 (our club in 1977)
John Hensley with our club since 1975
Tom Coleman with our club since 1980
Ben Baretta with our club since 1985 -
Ben also has the
distinction of being the only member who has completed 2 full
terms as President.
Terry Boyer will match his record this coming
year.
Thanks to:
Cathy for the wonderful presentation and yummy cookies!
Eleanor Kenitzer for her personal moment. Who knew we had a rod
and chain person in our midst? What a great story. Eleanor is a
woman of many talents!
Congratulations
to:
Business person of the year John Hensley! I was privileged to
attend the dinner and give the award to John. Thanks to Nicole for
her work on this award and to Ben for making sure John was at the
dinner! Well done all.
New bell ringers Derek Poppell and Ben Barretta. Both did a
smashing job of ringing the bell.
Wheel of Misfortune:
Jim Phillips spun the wheel and will be our greeter next week and
Derek spun the wheel and passed his $5.00 fine along to Eleanor.
I'm thinkin' Derek is going to enjoy his bell-ringer status.
Are you a bell-ringer yet? It's easy. Just fill out your PCP and
off we go...
from www.rotary.org regarding Rotary history:
Did you know that Rotary founder Paul Harris wasn't the first
president of a Rotary club?
That distinction is actually held by Harris's friend Silvester
Schiele, who served as the first president of the Rotary Club of
Chicago. Harris deferred his club leadership duties until February
1907, when he was elected the third president of the Chicago club.
Club firsts:
On 23 February 1905, Paul P. Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester
Schiele, and Hiram E. Shorey gathered in Chicago for what would
become known as the first Rotary club meeting. A second club was
formed in San Francisco in 1908, and soon after, clubs began to
pop up across North America.
On 1 August 1912, the Rotary Club of London became the first club
chartered outside of North America. The Rotary Club of Dublin,
Ireland, had been organized earlier, but didn't receive its
charter until 1 May 1913.
Presidential firsts:
Paul Harris was elected as first president of the National
Association of Rotary Clubs (which later became Rotary
International) in 1910, and is the only president to have served
two terms.
Other firsts: Canadian E. Leslie Pidgeon (1917-18) was the first
Rotary president from outside the United States, Sydney W. Pascall
(1931-32) was the first from Great Britain, and Maurice Duperrey
(1937-38) was the first from continental Europe.
Reminders:
February 9th will be a fun meeting with local author Chris Enss as
our speaker. It will be our second "bring your spouse or
significant other to lunch" meeting. Lunch will be 2/$20.00. What
a great opportunity to start your Valentine's celebration a little
early!
Club Assembly is April 21st at John Ascuaga's Nugget. If you want
to learn more about Rotary in a fun way, mark your calendars.
Change, change, change - our little boot that can made the rounds
last week and did very well!
Recipes - bring me your most loved family recipes and you can put
some candy in your pocket. Thanks to all who have brought in
recipes - I love seeing my recipe folder grow!
Thursday Tickler:
You don't have to be at a desk but you must be sitting.
While sitting at your desk make clockwise circles with your right
foot.
While doing this, draw the number " 6 " in the air with your right
hand.
Your foot will change direction. |
